  1. Cash to help flooding: Who gets what?published at 15:17

    The £50m announced by the Chancellor will provide councils with more than £500 for each household affected to help with temporary accommodation costs until they can get back home.

    Each household will be entitled to a grant of up to £5,000 to spend on protecting their homes against future floods, with measures such as flood barriers, water-resistant doors and windows or moving electricity sockets up to a safer level.

    Local authorities will receive £2,500 to help each flood-hit business in their area, and there will be specific funds for farmers to help restore land. 

    The money will also be used to help Cumbria and Lancashire assess damage to the local highway network and restore flood defences. 

    An additional £10m will be invested through the Environment Agency to repair defences damaged over the weekend.

  4. Skips to arrive in flood affected areas in Carlislepublished at 14:55

    Skips will be arriving in flood affected areas, Carlisle City Council says. They're going to Warwick Road, Shaddongate and the Caldew areas. 

    The needs of the more rural parts of the city are also being assessed, and the skips will be emptied and moved to other locations on demand.

  7. Diversions of up to 70 miles due to major damage on roadspublished at 14:36

    Just how much damage the county's roads have suffered is becoming clearer as the flood waters recede.

    The county council says it is aware of three major roads that have suffered "structural failure". They are:

    • The A591 main north and south route through the Lake District with a distance of some 21 miles is completely impassable. The diversion is 41 miles.
    • The A592 at Ullswater. The diversion route is 51 miles.
    • The A686 at Langwathby. The diversion route is approximately 70 miles.

    Howtown is completely cut off and specialist vehicles are needed to get to Glenridding and Patterdale. 

  8. Pooley Bridge damage revealed after level dropspublished at 14:25

    Speaking of bridges, the damage caused to Pooley Bridge in Ullswater is very apparent after the flood waters abated:

  9. More than 130 bridges had to be inspectedpublished at 14:17

    Cumbria County Council, external says that 131 bridges have been identified as being of strategic importance and required immediate inspection.  

    So far 72 of them have been inspected, with the remaining due to be looked at today.

    As of this morning:

    - Pooley Bridge and Middleton Hall Bridge have been completely lost.

    - Little Braithwaite Bridge, Gowan Old Bridge (Staveley), Hawes Bridge (Natland), Abbey Bridge (Staveley) and Millers Footbridge in Cockermouth have been partially lost.

    - Eden Bridge (Carlisle), Greta Bridge (Keswick), Derwent Bridge (Cockermouth), Eamont Bridge (near Penrith) and St Lawrence Bridge (Appleby) and the bridge at New Road, Burneside are closed to all traffic pending inspections.

    -  Rickerby Memorial Footbridge (Carlisle) is also closed pending repairs.

    Cumbria County Council say that consideration is now being given to the potential installation of temporary structures where necessary and appropriate.

  14. County Durham church collects for Cumbria flood victimspublished at 13:40

    Churches in Darlington, County Durham, are collecting donations for communities in Cumbria hit by the floods.

    St Columba's Church is opening on Saturday as a drop off point.

    Rev Sheilagh Williamson says: "Our hearts go out to them, so if we can help them in anyway, people can make contributions."

  16. Flood appeal raises more than £616,000published at 13:29

    The Cumbria 2015 Flood Appeal, external that's been set up to help the flood victims has now reached £616,000.

    The fund is being run by the Cumbria Community Foundation and was launched on 5 December, and it has now doubled its target to £2m.

    The foundation said grants would help flood victims with cleaning, emergency repairs, clothing, food and and basic furniture.

    South Lakeland Council says it is planning to contribute £50,000 to the appeal. The authority has already authorised £25,000 to be given to the fund from its reserves.

    The government has promised to match the fund up to a million pounds.

  19. About 1,000 homes and firms still without powerpublished at 13:07

    Electricity Northwest says 1,000 customers in Cumbria are still without power.

    Operations director Mark Williamson says: “We have now restored power to the vast majority of homes in Cumbria. 

    "Our focus now is to restore power to those areas worst affected by the floods, where our equipment also suffered extensive damage.  

    "We are working closely with energy suppliers to ensure that we have a co-ordinated response so that we can restore the remaining customers as soon as possible.  We will continue to work around the clock to achieve this".
