  3. School to stay closed due to lack of powerpublished at 10:28

    Trinity School in Carlisle has given more details about why it won't reopen until the new year.

    A statement on its website says, external: Unfortunately, Trinity School will have to remain closed to all year groups until after the Christmas holidays. 

    "This is due to the continued lack of power to any area of the school site which is hindering the clean-up process. The lack of power also means that we are unable to heat unaffected areas of the school, so we cannot now consider a partial re-opening for some year groups. 

    "The school remains inaccessible to both staff and students due to health and safety risks associated with contaminated water."

  4. Four schools closed after torrential floodspublished at 10:11

    Four schools remain closed in Cumbria today, including the largest in the county. 

    Here are schools that are closed:

    - Trinity School, Carlisle (closed until the new year)  

    - Crosby-on-Eden C of E School (closed until at least Monday 14 December)

    - Newman Catholic School (closed until Friday 11 December when further information will be available)

    - St Cuthbert's Catholic Community School, Carlisle

  5. 'About 1,000 sheep killed in flooding'published at 10:06

    The NFU says about 1,000 sheep have been killed in the Cumbrian floods.

    The deputy president of the union is visiting the county to see flood damage and assess where recovery fund assistance is needed. 

    Farmers are being asked for their photos.

  7. Hospitals in Whitehaven and Carlisle running as normalpublished at 09:53

    Hospitals in Whitehaven and Carlisle are expected to return to "business as normal" today. 

    The Trust in charge of the hospitals, external says mains power has been restored and elective surgery is expected to go ahead as planned. 

    Patients will be contacted directly if any planned appointments have to be cancelled.

    Cumbria County Council says, external it has had reports of HGVs ignoring the 7.5-tonne weight limit on Warwick Bridge.

    People are being urged to use different routes to get to Junction 44 of the M6.

    Media officer Andy Hall said: “The force of the floodwater has toppled cabinets, flipped desks and almost completely destroyed filing systems.

    "A layer of mud and silt has been left behind now that the water has receded and there’s no doubt that we’re going to need help to speed the return-to-normal process up somewhat. 

    "If anyone does have a few hours to spare then please pop along and see us. There’s plenty for us all to do.”

  10. RSPCA workers hailed for rescuing peoplepublished at 09:37

    Our Facebook video of RSPCA workers rescuing families and pets from the flood waters has gone viral, with tens of thousands of people praising them for their efforts.

    Joanne Hadfield writes, external: "Well done to the RSPCA for their efforts. Flood water is frightening for people and animals. They did extremely well under very difficult circumstances and some came up from Wales. It's a huge job & they were very professional. I hope the flood waters subside very soon x"

    There's widespread rain across Cumbria again this morning. Walking into work this morning in Carlisle was very, very wet.

    I thought I'd share what some of BBC Radio Cumbria's weather watchers have been saying the weather is like across the county:

    Shap - raining really hard, drains are full again.

    Alston - pouring down, 8C (46F) and the wind is picking up.

    Bowness-on-Windermere - raining heavily and the wind is picking up.

    Penton - pouring with rain, heavy sky and a strong breeze.

    Silloth - rather wild, windy and dark

    The Environment Agency say that rivers in Cumbria are not expected to return to the high water levels that were seen at the weekend.

    All three bridges in Appleby are closed, leaving the town severed with no way of crossing from one side to the other.

    If you want to get from one end of the town to the other you'll need to take a diversion which will take around 30 mins by car.

  14. More heavy rain forecast for Cumbriapublished at 09:06

    Heavy rain will return later with further flooding, residents have been warned.

    Forecasters have predicted 12 hours of rainfall - between 20mm and 40mm - starting in the afternoon.

    But flooding will not be on the scale seen in recent days in the wake of Storm Desmond, according to BBC Weather.

  15. Update: Eden Bridge closed to traffic and pedestrianspublished at 08:56

    There's been some confusion over whether Eden Bridge in Carlisle is completely closed this morning. 

    Earlier Cumbria Police told us that it was closed to traffic but open for pedestrians.

    Now Cumbria County Council has just confirmed that it's closed for both traffic and pedestrians.

  16. Farmer's 'miracle' after cows found 18 miles awaypublished at 08:48

    A farmer in Cumbria has described it as a "miracle" that some of his cows that were swept away in the floods were found alive and well.

    One of Gordon Tweedie's cows was found 18 miles away from the farm in Lazonby in Cumbria.

    He says fellow farmers and neighbours have been helping to search for the animals. Watch the video here.
