  2. Latest flooding picture across England and Walespublished at 18:05

    Three severe flood warnings - denoting a potential danger to life - are in place in the North West and all relate to the River Yarrow at Croston in Lancashire.

    A further 35 flood warnings - meaning flooding expected and immediate action required - are in place across England and Wales.

    Every bout of flooding triggers a predictable cycle of despair, anger and scrutiny, but this one has provoked an unprecedented level of criticism and questioning.

    However professional the response, questions are inevitably raised about why this effort is needed in the first place, with people demanding to know why their communities were not better defended.

    And that leads to a sense of anger that as victims of flooding feel ignored or let down by the authorities for failing to keep them safe.

  4. 'Tense' day with Keswick flood fearspublished at 17:48

    Keswick Tourism chief Linda Furniss says it's been a "tense day" for people in the area.

    She told BBC Cumbria's News Hour that recent floods had hit local businesses as tourists cancelled bookings over the festive period.

    "Some places have suffered and that has affected visitor numbers. Regrettably, there have been some cancellations of accommodation, but we're hoping numbers are going to be good over New Year.

    "Visitors need to know it's safe and that we're open for business."

  5. Cumbria 'got away quite lightly'published at 17:29

    Supt Mark Pannone of Cumbria Police said the county escaped the worst of Storm Frank today and praised drivers for taking care on the roads.

    "We were planning for the worst, but thankfully that didn't happen. We've had strong winds and rain but compared to what could have happened, and to what we experienced recently, we got away quite lightly.

    "The attention we put into Braithwaite with the military and Environment Agency was well spent.

    "The roads around Cumbria have been quieter than usual. People have been exercising caution and that's really appreciated."

  8. Lancashire CCC launches £10,000 Red Rose Floods Appealpublished at 16:41

    Lancashire County Cricket Club have launched an appeal to help communities which have been affected by the recent floods.

    The Old Trafford club hope the Red Rose Floods Appeal will raise an initial target of £10,000.

    The funds raised by the appeal, launched in conjunction with the LCCC Foundation and Lancashire Cricket Board, will be distributed to "carefully selected recipients" in the county.

    December 2015 has been the wettest on record for parts of the UK and has seen several communities swamped by rising waters.

    What storms hit when and where, and what damage did they cause?

    Storm Desmond was the Met Office's fourth named storm of the season and caused major problems in Cumbria and Lancashire.

    Earlier the Environment Agency said the river was starting to peak well beloe the defence level but it was still watching it closely.

    The Met Office's amber weather warning for Cumbria expired at 15:00 however there is still a yellow warning for rain which is in place until 18:00.

  16. 'Worst of rain has left the North West'published at 14:50

    BBC Weather

    BBC duty forecaster Aisling Creevey says the worst of the rain has now left the north-west of England. She said there would be some heavy showers this evening but they were not expecting them to cause problems.

    Tomorrow - New Year's Eve - there will be a few showers in the morning and some in the middle of the day. 

    She said it would start to feel very chilly.
