    A 76-year-old woman died when she was hit by a car while walking near Backbarrow last night.

    It happened at about 17:00 and police have appealed for witnesses.

    The road was closed for five hours while police investigations took place.

    • Temperatures at 3,000ft: -4C.
    • Winds: Fresh or strong west to northwesterly, gusts 35mph.
    • Cloud: Widespread cloud down to 1,000ft at first, becoming variable around 1,500ft as showers come and go.
    • Visibility: Good, occasionally very poor in early snow and in hill fog and sleet and snow showers.
    • Freezing level: About 650ft.

    The rangers who compile the Lake District Weatherline report say they saw a high avalanche risk on the lee slopes of Helvellyn yesterday, and anyone heading onto the fells will need full winter equipment and the knowledge to use it.

    Early cloud with some snow will break, leading to largely bright but cold morning. Sunshine and further scattered wintry showers follow. Winds will also remain brisk, leading to a cold day with temperatures of 3C (37F).

  8. Army training area tops for depth of snowpublished at 08:50 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2018

    The Spadeadam military training area in the far north of Cumbria is the place with the deepest snow in the county, according to Alan Goodman, from the Met Office.

    He says the area, which is known for some of the worst weather in the county, is now under 23cm (9in) of the white stuff.

    The A66 is likely to remain closed for much of the morning, partly because of snow and partly because of some wreckage that needs clearing over the county boundary.

    In Cumbria a number of high routes are shut, including the A592 Kirkstone Pass, and the A6 Shap Summit (we'd show you a picture, but the webcams seem to be covered in ice) and the Honister Pass.

    Many of the other roads in rural areas are still fairly snowy even after treatment. This is the A593 south of Coniston.

    There are now seven schools closed across Cumbria because of the bad weather.

    They are Skelton School, Fell View in Caldbeck, Kirkby Stephen Grammar School, Morland Area C of E Primary School, Brough Community Primary School, Crosby Ravensworth C of E School, and Penruddock Primary School.

    • A6 Shap Summit
    • A66 both directions at Bowes
    • A66 Westbound at Gilling West
    • Honister Pass
    • B5305 - between Between Longthwaite Road (Wigton) and M6 J41 (Penrith)
    • Dearham Bridge Road
