  3. Poppi: Calls mount for new inquirypublished at 11:20 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2018

The repercussions continue this morning after the inquest into the death of the Barrow toddler Poppi Worthington found she had, on the balance of probabilities, been abused by her father before suffocating in his bed the same night in 2012.

    Jerry Grahamp talking to journalists

Yesterday Chief Constable Jerry Graham told journalists he regretted how little help the police inquiry had been for the coroner, but he said changes had been made since the flawed investigation.

Mr Graham said he would be seeking early talks with the Crown Prosecution Service to discuss what could be done, but the CPS, for its part, said it did not plan to reopen a case it had reviewed twice before, unless it was referred by the coroner.

The Barrow and Furness Labour MP John Woodock said the public had lost confidence in police being able to investigate such crimes properly in every case.

    Quote Message

We now have to try to salvage what we can to ensure, one, if there is any hope of actually any kind of criminal trial even at this late stage, but two, to give the public the confidence they are lacking at the moment that this kind of thing will not be allowed to happen again."

  7. Transport plan for the north to be unveiledpublished at 10:06 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2018

    Colin Briggs
    Look North

A 30-year plan for transforming transport across the north of England is being unveiled later.

Transport for the North will share the plans at Darlington railway station, Newcastle Airport and Carlisle College.

    Train

They include the development of Northern Powerhouse Rail - a fast rail network between the north's six biggest cities.

The improvements would cost an estimated £6bn, but it is hoped the region's economy would benefit to the tune of £100m by 2050.

  8. Anglers plea for salmon stocking on Derwentpublished at 09:41 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2018

A group of anglers has asked the Environment Agency for permission to reopen a salmon hatchery on the River Derwent at Keswick.

The group hopes to restore the river's stocks; it was once one of the finest salmon fishing rivers in the country.

    River Greta

The authorities have resisted the idea of stocking the river artificially, but Paul Barnes, who fishes the river, says experience elsewhere suggests the scheme would have a major impact on the Derwent and the Greta (pictured).

    Quote Message

The best salmon river in England is the Tyne, they're the only one that operate a hatchery."

  9. Poppi's father 'supported second inquest' says sisterpublished at 09:21 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2018

The father of Poppi Worthington wanted a second inquest to go ahead even though when he was called to give evidence he declined to answer most of the questions he was asked, according to his sister.

Yesterday Cumbria's senior coroner, David Roberts, said three weeks of evidence had led him to believe Mr Worthington had abused his daughter on the night she died, and then went to sleep with her in an unsafe position in his bed.

Mr Worthington declined to answer more that 250 questions, but his sister Tracy says he wanted to have his daughter's death investigated in public.

  19. Barrow MP demands inquiry into 'grotesque' police failingspublished at 17:36 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2018

Barrow's MP John Woodcock has called for a public inquiry into what he calls "grotesque failings in the police investigation" into the death of Poppi Worthington.

Today Cumbria's senior coroner concluded Poppi, who was 13 months old when she died at her home in Barrow, was assaulted before she suffocated in her father's bed.

An Independent Police Complaints Commission report last year said Det Insp Amanda Sadler, who initially led the investigation into Poppi's death, and Det Supt Mike Forrester who took over, had cases to answer for gross misconduct.

Det Supt Forrester retired before any action could be taken, and Det Insp Sadler was demoted and then left the force.

Mr Woodcock said in a statement: “It is hard to overstate our community’s anger at seeing an officer found responsible for gross incompetence able to keep a job in the force before retiring. This is not accountability.

“I am today writing to the Home Secretary to demand she establishes a public inquiry that will examine the following:

    • Safeguards to ensure gross negligence in a criminal investigation can never again be allowed to place communities at risk
    • Changes to policing to strengthen accountability and prevent negligent officers from retiring to escape scrutiny
    • The decision by Cumbria Police to offer an officer found guilty of gross incompetence an alternative senior role in the force rather than dismissing her
    • Changes to strengthen guidance on social care protection for the children of parents who have previously had a child taken into permanent care
    • The required level investment in our public services to deliver these changes
  20. Police commissioner: We've made improvements since Poppipublished at 17:28 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2018

Mr McCall said the inadequate operation procedures used in 2012 had been addressed.

    Quote Message
