    A girl from Millom has become the national BMX racing champion for her age group for the second year in a row.

    Emie Seward, eight, has clinched the title with 10 wins out of 12 so far this season, external and two races left to go.

    During the season, she also ascended to be the number two rider in Europe and the World number four.

  5. Storm Ali: Cumbria Police warn drivers to be cautiouspublished at 17:04 British Summer Time 19 September 2018

    Here's a round up of a few of the issues on the county's roads so far this afternoon:

    • M6 Northbound only one lane open between J43 and J44 because of an overturned HGV. High-sided vehicles travelling both ways on the M6 between those junctions are being diverted via Carlisle because of the strong winds.
    • Disruption likely on M6 Southbound just before Tebay Services due to collision.
    • A66 has been closed in both directions to high-sided vehicles between the M6 and Scotch Corner

    A Cumbrian food bank is warning that more people could go hungry in the county if food prices were to rise further as Britain leaves the European Union.

    Rachel Rodway chairs Carlisle Foodbank and says that the cost of food has risen over the past few years.

    She fears that life could become even more difficult for people living on the poverty line in Cumbria.

  10. Paralysed traffic officer pleads for drivers to hang up on mobile phone usepublished at 15:52 British Summer Time 19 September 2018

    A Cumbrian man who was seriously injured and paralysed after being hit by a car driven by a man sending text messages is asking motorists to stop using their mobile phone behind the wheel.

    Highways officers Paul Holroyd and Adam Gibb were struck by Peter Morrison's car on the M6 hard shoulder near Tebay in 2016.

    Adam Gibb was killed, and Paul Holroyd now uses a wheelchair after being paralysed from the waist down.

    One lane has reopened on M6 Northbound between J43 and J44 near Carlisle.

    The motorway had been closed completely when an HGV was overturned by heavy winds.

    All high-sided vehicles are still being diverted off the motorway between Junction 34 and 44 via Carlisle.

    Officers are appealing for information after a man indecently exposed himself near a school in West Cumbria.

    Police were called at around 15:15 on Monday 17 September to an area behind Ashfield Primary School in Workington.

    They have described the man as white with dark hair and wearing tracksuit bottoms.

  15. Storm Ali: Fallen trees hit rail services across North Westpublished at 14:12 British Summer Time 19 September 2018

    There are transport issues across the region caused by Storm Ali with a number of trees blown down across railway lines.

    No TransPennine Express services are operating between Preston and Scotland, after a train hit a tree near Gretna.

    A spokesperson for TransPennine Express said no-one was hurt but no services will operate between Preston and Scotland for the rest of the day.

    Anyone with tickets for today will be able to use them tomorrow.

    Virgin Trains also said there is disruption on services between Preston and Carlisle as a speed restriction is in place because of high winds.

    In Liverpool, a tree hanging close to overhead wires is causing issues between Liverpool Lime Street and Edge Hill stations.

    Northern said fewer trains are able to run on some lines as a result.

    Some 6,650 properties have lost power, according to electricity supplier, Electricity North West.

    The power company says it is dealing with 25 separate faults, external across Cumbria including in Wigton, Aspatria and Penrith.

    The 2,550 properties which lost power earlier today have already had their supply restored by engineers.

    The M6 motorway is closed on the northbound carriageway between J43 (Carlisle) and J44 (Carlisle North).

    Drivers are being asked for follow the Solid Triangle diversion symbols by leaving the M6 at J43 (Carlisle South) and travelling through Carlisle to rejoin the motorway at J44.
