  2. Rape trial jury shown CCTV of of woman with accusedpublished at 16:55 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    The jury in a trial of a man accused of raping a woman in Penrith last April has been shown CCTV footage of the two walking through the town.

    Mark Farrell, 28, of St Ann's Crescent, Carlisle, denies three charges of rape, saying the woman consented.

    Today the Carlisle Crown Court jury was shown pictures of the woman walking alone past the Warehouse pub, and then with Farrell in Burrowgate, where the two were seen entering an alleyway.

    In an interview with police, the woman said he pushed her against a stone staircase and forced sexual contact on her. The trial continues.

  3. Minor earth tremor recorded beneath county borderpublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    The British geological Survey says it detected an earth tremor yesterday afternoon, external beneath the small village of Catlowdy, north east of Longtown and close to the Scottish border.

    It is highly unlikely anyone felt the earth move, as the tremor was only 1.4 on the Richter scale, and the event happened about 13km (eight miles) underground.

    The managing director of Cumbria Tourism has welcomed a £285,000 contribution towards promoting the Lake District from the rail industry, after major disruption earlier this year.

    If you have seen someone carrying a backpack and running down the A6 between Carlisle and Shap today, it's former Royal Marine Chris Thrall, who is running from John O'Groats to Land's End for veterans' charities.

    A quick update on an earlier story we brought you - It's emerged that the rail industry as a whole has contributed towards the £285,000 being spent on a publicity drive for the Lake District, after rail services in Cumbria were disrupted over the past year.

    Cumbria Tourism said earlier that Northern, which cancelled trains altogether on the Lakes Line from Oxenholme to Windermere for several weeks during the the summer, was paying for the promotional work.

    But a spokesman for Northern said the money has been provided by the rail industry, not Northern individually.

    A TV presenter diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease has completed the Dales Way walk to raise funds for the main charity dealing with the condition.

    Dave Clark, 52, who is a sports presenter with Sky Sports, walks the 90 miles from Ilkley to Bowness on Windermere in six days, with his colleague Martin Turner, who also has the disease.

    Dave who was told three years ago that he had the condition, said the exercise helped him control the symptoms of Parkinsons.

    The area around Carlisle station could be improved under "transformative" plans agreed yesterday at a meeting of Borderlands Initiative, external, a group that brings together councils, businesses and community groups along the England-Scotland Border

    Officials are putting together a bid for government funding that could run into several million pounds for four projects, of which the station "gateway" would be one, aiming to attract more people and capitalise on what's described as "the untapped potential" of the area..

    Another is to develop plans to reopen the rest the Waverley railway line through to Carlisle.

    It's hoped the government will announce whether the money will be available in the Budget later this year.

  10. Something to reflect on: New art on Furness commonpublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Settlement, an installation of mirror sculptures by Rob Mulholland, has just opened on Birkrigg Common, between Ulverston and Barrow.

    The work was commissioned by the Morecambe Bay Partnership and inspired by the views across the bay, and the history of human habitation on the common, which dates back to the stone ages..

    The installation, external, which was first placed on the opposite side of the bay neat Heysham, will be on the common until the end of the month.

    An appeal's gone out in Egremont after an elderly Boxer dog disappeared, after being hit by a car.

    Bruno has not been since since the accident on Howbank Road on Sunday and his owner, Kenzie Leder, fears he may be injured.

    Thousands of sheep go under the hammer at auction marts across the county at this time of year as Cumbria's farmers take their profit from lambing, sell on those ewes that are surplus to requirements, and look for high prices on the best tups.

  13. New storm warnings for wind and rain across Cumbriapublished at 12:09 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    An amber warning for strong winds, external has now been issued for southern Scotland and the northern fringes on Cumbria from 08:00 tomorrow.

    Storm Ali, as it's been called, is already the subject of yellow warnings that cover the north of England and all of Scotland.

    The amber warning fringes the Solway coast, and says winds could gust to 80mph on high ground and coasts from late morning before easing from the west.

    There is also a yellow warning for rain, external on Thursday, saying up to 100mm (4in) of rain could fall in the southern parts of the county between 04:00 and 22:00.

  14. Update: Battered dog Bruce now 'doing well'published at 11:49 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    A dog found with horrific injuries near Carlisle earlier this months is now "doing well", according to the vets who have been treating the bull lurcher called Bruce.

    But Ashlea Vets, in Carlisle, say Bruce has a long way to go until he's fully recovered.

    The RSPCA, who are looking for whoever injured the dog, say they believe he was beaten and set on fire before he was found at Little Orton.

    Police have appealed for witnesses after a man and a woman attacked another couple in Ulverston at the weekend.

    It happened just after 21:00 on Saturday in Queen Street, when the suspects drove alongside the couple, got out of the car, and assaulted them.

    Campaigners who want the open air swimming pool in Grange-over-Sands to be reopened say it could make a "comfortable" profit at no cost to the taxpayer.

    The Save Grange Lido group has published its business plan, external, before a private meeting tomorrow with South Lakeland Council, which owns the derelict pool.

    South Lakeland Council closed the pool in 1995, saying the cost of running and essential repairs rendered the attraction unviable, and it is now trying to restore the listed structure in a way that secures its future.

    But the Save Grange Lido group put together a report based on the council's own documents and the operation of other open-air pools from Penzance to Aberdeenshire to say reopening the lido could create a major tourist attraction.

  18. Cumbria police join new national knife campaignpublished at 10:03 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    People in Cumbria are once again being asked to hand in knives to the police, as part of a week-long "surrender" campaign.

    From today until next Monday, people can take the knives, in a box or bag, and leave them anonymously in bins inside six of the county's police stations.

    It's part of national efforts to reduce knife crime and although Cumbria has a below average number of crimes involving knives, there were 149 knife injuries recorded last year.

    Ways of protecting vulnerable people in Cumbria while they are enjoying a night out are being discussed today.

    Cumbria's Police and Crime Commissioner will meet representatives from various organisations, including the police, the licensed trade, and the Security Industry Authority, which licences door staff.

    They'll discuss child sexual exploitation, modern day slavery and how to discourage young people from drinking too much alcohol.

    The train company Northern is giving £285,000 to a campaign urging people to visit Cumbria following months of disruption to its services.

    Northern runs trains on a number of lines around Cumbria, but its services were badly disrupted after new timetables collapsed earlier this year, and were cancelled altogether for weeks on the line from Oxenholme into the Lake District at Windermere.

    Now the company has passed on £285,000 to Cumbria Tourism which will be spent promoting the county.

    Northern says it is now running a full timetable across the county and that punctuality has improved in recent weeks.
