  17. Migration limits after Brexit 'could hit tourism industry'published at 17:40 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

New proposals to manage immigration after Brexit could be disastrous for the county's hospitality and food sectors, Cumbria Chamber of Commerce and the tourism industry are warning.

A new report commissioned by the government says migrants from the EU could be treated the same as people from the rest of the world after Brexit, and the Migration Advisory Committee was "not convinced there needs to be a work route for low-skilled workers" from the EU to fill jobs in industries such as catering or hospitality.

The Chamber of Commerce says there are at least 10,000 EU migrants working in Cumbria, mostly in the hospitality and food processing industries.

Gill Haigh says that with a population of only 500,000, Cumbria doesn't have enough people of the right ages and skills to fill all the jobs in these industries.

    Quote Message

We rely upon workers to come and fill these jobs and they do a really good job, so we don't want anything in place that might put those people off.
