  1. Police issue CCTV in linked assaults investigationpublished at 08:42 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2019

    Police have renewed an appeal for help finding a man who attacked a girl and a woman on successive days in Kendal, and have now released a CCTV picture of a man seen in Sandes Avenue near the time of the second attack.

    Police say they want to interview the man about an attack on a 15-year-old girl in the area at about 09:35 on Friday 29 November, and a 30-year-old woman was approached the following morning not far away on a riverside path at Dockray.

    Officers would also like to hear from anyone in the area at the time, or who drove through and has a dashcam.

    It will be a stormy day with strong winds and bands of heavy rain moving through during the morning and into the afternoon, with highest temperatures from 9C to 12C (48F to 54F).

    A yellow Met Office weather warning, external says the winds will develop through the morning, with gusts to 60mph inland and 70mph around some coasts and higher ground.

    There will be a band of particularly heavy rain later, and the Environment Agency says that this rain falling on to waterlogged ground could cause flooding on the rivers Brathay, Rothay and Winster, external, and around the Keswick campsite on Derwentwater, external.

  5. Two hurt in Morecambe Bay Coast Road collisionpublished at 18:04 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2019

    Two people were injured in a crash on the Coast Raod between Barrow and Ulverston earlier today.

    Police say a Nissan Leaf and a Vauxhall Astra collided just before 12:00, and the 62-year-old Astra driver, and a passenger, were both taken to the Furness General hospital with injuries not thought to be life-threatening.

    The driver of the Nissan was not hurt. The road was closed for two-and-a-half hours, and police are now appealing for witnesses.

    Cloud will gradually build in through the late evening and overnight, and the lowest temperatures, from -3C to 0C (27F to 32F) will be around or before midnight.

    In the early hours, especially towards dawn, bands of rain will begin to move in from the west and it will become breezy.

    The Met Office has posted a yellow weather warning for strong winds, external, gusting to 70mph over coasts and hills, with the strongest being followed by a band of intense rain.

  7. Cumbrian local paper editors' jobs are cutpublished at 17:38 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2019

    Most of Cumbria's local newspapers are to come under a single group editor, after the editors of the six titles were made redundant..

    The News and Star in Carlisle, The Cumberland News, Barrow's Evening Mail, the Westmorland Gazette, the Workington Times and Star and the Whitehaven News are now under the charge of Vanessa Sims, currently group editor, who was editor of the Barrow Mail until last May.

    The newspapers are all owned by Newsquest, the British part of the giant US corporation, Gannett Inc which is currently being merged with another very large publisher, the New Media Investment Group.

    The Bluebirds Trust chairman Steven Herbert has appealed to the club's fans to continue to support the trust in keeping a 10% stake in Barrow AFC.

    The trust raised £50,000 in the summer to purchase the initial stake, and Herbert believes that if the club is to be successful in their push for Promotion from the National League the Trust needs to continue helping the other board members to support the club.

  10. Giant wind farm gives £54,000 to school schemespublished at 16:14 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2019

    The Danish firm Orsted, which runs the giant Walney wind farm, has handed over more than £50,000 to two educational schemes to help people qualify for jobs in renewable energy.

    Nearly £40,000 is going to two schemes, in Cumbria and Lancaster, which each bring together eight schools to improve training in science, techology, engineering and maths.

    Another £14,000 has been given to a similar scheme involving the 11 schools in the Furness Education Consortium.

  11. Prolific shoplifter loses appeal against jail termpublished at 15:41 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2019

    A Carlisle shoplifter with 208 offences on his record has lost his appeal against a jail term.

    Pete Vickers, 42, of Chatsworth Square, was handed a prison sentence in April, along with a court order that banned him from entering city Shopwatch premises and a garden centre for two years.

    But in November he was seen in a store in central Carlisle, where he stole household goods he intended to sell to buy food, and he was jailed again.

    An appeal at Carlisle Crown Court was told Vickers had been threatened over a drugs debt, and had not been out to collect his benefit, or see his GP or social services.

    Judge Julie Clemitson said that Vickers had got back on to medication in prison, but she was unable to allow the appeal.

  12. Charity says Cumbria police 'arresting fewer children'published at 15:05 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2019

    The number of children being arrested in Cumbria has fallen by 78% over the past seven years, according to a national charity.

    The Howard League for Penal Reform, external says the drop is in line with national trends, with 405 people under 17 being read the caution in 2018, compared with 554 the year before and 1,864 in 2011.

    The league says research has shown that every contact a child has with with the criminal justice system drags them more deeply into it and leads to more crime.

    Frances Crook, the chief executive, said: "Cumbria Police and other forces up and down the country have diverted resources to tackling serious crime instead of arresting naughty children."

  13. Travel: Crash blocks main route into Kendalpublished at 14:27 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2019

    The main road into Kendal from the West, Stricklandgate, has been blocked by a multi-vehicle crash at the junction with Busher Walk.

    Police say traffic coming in and out of town from and to the Windermere direction will be affected.

    It was a thoroughly wet weekend, and volunteers with the Penrith Mountain Rescue team took advantage of high river levels to brush up their fast-water rescue skills.

    The team used the River Eden to practise techniques that mean they can help people in the water without any of the volunteers put themselves in danger by going in..

    Cumbria's mountain rescue teams have played a big role helping people in all the major floods of the past dozen years, and they have gathered the necessary equipment and skills to work in rivers deep as well as mountains high.

  17. Football: Barrow clear at top, while scouts watch Bluespublished at 11:57 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2019

    Barrow retained their three point lead at the top of the National League on Saturday.

    Dior Angus' seventh goal in 10 games sealed a 1-0 win over Aldershot as one of the Bluebirds' nearest rivals, Solihuill, went down to a surprise defeat at Wrexham.

    Carlisle only managed a draw in their fight to stay in League Two, but the head coach Chris Beech says scouts from Arsenal and Everton watched Saturday's match at Morecambe to see teenage defender Jarrad Branthwaite, and he has a big future.

  19. New West Coast train management 'must aim high'published at 11:00 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2019

    Virgin Trains will be a "hard act to follow" for the new company Avanti, that is now running services on the West Coast Mainline, according to one Cumbrian passenger group.

    Virgin ran the services linking Cumbria with Scotland and London for more than 20 years, but it was excluded from bidding for the new franchise, because its business partner, Stagecoach, didn't meet the government's pension rules.

    Avanti West Coast, a partnership between the Italian state-owned firm Trenitalia and the UK operator First, has taken over, although many of the staff are the same, the management will be trying to show it brings higher standards.

    Robert Talbot of the Lakes Line User Group says Virgin has set the bar high.

    Conservationists surveying the wildlife on the Eyecott Hill nature reserve, external, just east of Blencathra, say they have found salmon in the main beck there for the first time.

    It's known the fish, which return to the smaller becks in the uplands to breed, have been present in the Glenderamackin, downstream, for many years, but it is not known how long they have not been making it up to the Eyecott area.

    The Cumbria Wildlife Trust started surveying the waters on the 216-hectare (533-acre) reserve in 2015.

    Staff looking after it say that while fish populations vary a lot from year to year, the arrival of salmon and an increase in species such as brown trout are mainly happening in the area where they done work to improve the habitat such as tree planting.
