  11. Boxer calls Wales beard ruling 'discriminatory'published at 14:12 British Summer Time 3 July 2019

    Sandish Shoker
    BBC News

A Leicestershire boxer says a ruling that stops him competing in Wales because of his beard is discrimination.

Aaron Singh, a student at Cardiff University, keeps a beard as a mark of his Sikh faith, but the Welsh Amateur Boxing Association (WABA) demands all fighters must be clean shaven.

Last year England Boxing reversed the beard ban after a campaign from Sikh and Muslim boxers.

Mr Singh, 20, said: "To have someone tell me that I'm not allowed to participate in something like a sporting event because I've got a beard - I personally see that as being wrong.

"I can do it [boxing] an hour away but as soon as I come here, it's not allowed."

The WABA said it would consider whether the "sporting integrity" of amateur boxing would be affected by overturning the rule.

A decision will be made later this month.

  12. Pregnant Labour MP 'bullied' over Chris Williamson rowpublished at 14:08 British Summer Time 3 July 2019

    Press Association

Labour deputy leader Tom Watson has hit out over reported moves to "bully" a pregnant MP out of the party for calling for the sacking of Derby North member Chris Williamson.

Ellie Reeves was one of 121 MPs who last week signed a statement calling for the Labour whip to be withdrawn from Mr Williamson for saying the party was "too apologetic" about anti-Semitism.

A member of her local Lewisham West and Penge party in south London has since written to the constituency chairman calling for a vote of no confidence and the triggering of formal deselection proceedings.

Labour sought to play down the move, saying no motion had actually been tabled or moved and the party member concerned had confirmed he did not intend to do so.

Mr Watson, who organised the statement demanding Mr Williamson's removal from the parliamentary party, said such "reprehensible behaviour" could not be tolerated.

He called on the entire shadow cabinet to denounce the attempt to remove the MP while she was five months' pregnant.

Shadow health secretary and Leicester South MP Jon Ashworth also criticised the idea of a no confidence motion against Ellie Reeves, describing it as "ludicrous".

  16. Derby hospital plans on hold after losing out on cashpublished at 10:18 British Summer Time 3 July 2019

    BBC Radio Derby

Expansion plans for hospitals in Derby have been pushed back after a disagreement with auditors over a massive property transaction - which bosses hoped would make it eligible for a £62m bonus from the NHS.

Multi-storey car parks and extended wards to provide increased bed space were proposed, including an expansion to the Royal Derby Hospital last year.

The University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust said it is now having to look again for the money - so it could be more than two years before any work can begin.

Trust chief executive Gavin Boyle said they were expecting to receive the money, but were "disappointed with the outcome of the audit".

He added: "Sometimes these things work and sometimes they don't, but I think it was still the right thing to do to try and access those funds."

  18. Bar owners 'overwhelmed' by donations after vandalismpublished at 08:49 British Summer Time 3 July 2019

    Sandish Shoker
    BBC News

The owners of a Nottingham bar say they have been overwhelmed by people's generosity after a vandal trashed their men's bathroom.

On Friday, the sinks at The Chameleon were ripped out which flooded the toilets, hand dryers were damaged and lights in the stairwell were smashed.

"We don't understand why anyone would want to try and completely destroy a bathroom," John Rothera said. "It was in a bad state."

After Mr Rothera posted about the damage on Facebook, external, a fundraising page suggested by their customers has now raised more than £4,000.

    Chameleon bathroom damage

Mr Rothera said he and partner Lauren Insley were "totally and utterly overwhelmed" by the response.

He said: "We expected a lot of comments from people saying they were annoyed, but people were suggesting giving money. We really weren't expecting anything off anyone."

Mr Rothera, who runs the bar with his partner, said they still did not know who the culprit was.

The donated money will now be used to re-do the entire bathrooms and "make them more indestructible". Any remaining money will be used for "general maintenance".
