Former Derby North MP Chris Williamson has called on the Labour Party not to field a candidate against him in the general election.
Labour's National Executive Committee chose not to endorse Mr Williamson as a candidate while he is suspended after an anti-Semitism row.
Mr Williamson announced his resignation from the party and will now stand as an independent.
Speaking to BBC Radio Derby, he said: "The last thing I ever expected or wanted to be doing [is] to stand against the party I've given my life to for almost 44 years.
"I would now appeal to the Labour Party not to field a candidate in Derby North because I will support a Labour programme.
"They won't find a more pro-Jeremy Corbyn candidate standing in this election."
He said Labour fielding a candidate could threaten to split the vote.
