    Two councils in the region have opened up emergency shelters for rough sleepers tonight.

    Bassetlaw District Council and Chesterfield Borough Council have activated their Severe Weather Emergency Provision (SWEP) which provides emergency accommodation in extreme weathers.

    The flooded part of the A1 from North Muskham stretches 800m (0.5 miles), Highways England has said.

    Operations manager, Mark Munnoch, told BBC Radio Nottingham the water was "washing off the farm fields straight onto the carriageway".

    "The problem we have at the moment is the fields are all saturated and the water is just running off them," he added.

    He said drainage experts were at the scene to remove the water while other officers were managing the traffic in the area.

    The road remains closed between North Muskham and the Apleyhead junction where the A1 meets the A57 and A614 Blyth Road.

    A number of houses have been flooded in a Nottinghamshire village following heavy rains.

    John Smith, the parish clerk of Egmanton, said at least one of his neighbours had had to move in to a hotel because about two feet of water had flooded their home, and five out of six homes on his street are flooded.

    He added today he found out they have "finally" bought the land for a dry reservoir to stop this kind of flooding happen again.

    But he said the village was "extremely angry" about the flooding after so many years of trying to stop it.

    Mr Smith said they started to look for solutions after bad flooding in 2007, when about 25% of the village ended up having to leave their homes for six months.

    "Seeing this makes me feel terrible," he said.

    "A lot of people in the village are extremely nervous because of what happened last time."

    Mike Pringle, a local councillor, said he "couldn't believe" the speed flood waters rose, leaving the centre of the village beneath up to 16in (40cm) of water.
