A new footbridge over the A52 has been delayed because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Derby City Council said the A52 Wyvern Transport Improvement Scheme remains "a key infrastructure project", but said the "extremely complex operation" to build the bridge has been delayed because it would be "impossible" to adhere to social distancing measures during its installation.

The authority and contractor Galliford Try is working on a revised plan to put the bridge in place "as soon as possible" once restrictions are lifted.

  18. Lottery fraudster duped people out of thousands of poundspublished at 15:16 British Summer Time 8 April 2020

    Ethan Connolly-Forster
    BBC News

A lottery fraudster has been jailed for four-and-a-half years after duping 11 people out of more than £330,000.

Leicestershire Police said between August 2016 and May 2018, Herito Marquez (below) and an accomplice approached elderly or vulnerable people in the street and claimed they had won the lottery but due to their immigration status, they could not claim their winnings.

They said if the victims helped them claim their prize, they would get a share.

Before they could get the cash, the force said the victims were asked to hand over money or jewellery to secure their stake.

Similar offences were carried out in Leicester, Birmingham and Hounslow.

A nationwide wanted appeal for Marquez was issued in March 2017 - he was subsequently arrested in Kent in November 2018.

"Some victims lost their life savings at the hands of Marquez and his associate," Det Sgt Fraser McIntosh, one of the investigating officers, said.

An image of the "disgusting mess" caused by unsuitable items being flushed into drains has been released by a council.

The brown sludge was found to be blocking drains in a residential street.

Bolsover District Council said with more people at home putting greater pressure on the sewage system, it was important only toilet paper was used.

A statement on the council's website said: "Can you please ensure you only flush toilet paper down your toilet and not baby wipes or kitchen roll?

"This is the disgusting mess our drainage operatives have to deal with. A situation that can so easily be avoided."

Water company Severn Trent said it has dealt with 3,000 sewer flooding and blockages in the past fortnight.
