  11. Progress 'at long last' at troubled prisonpublished at 13:14 British Summer Time 7 April 2020

    Liam Barnes
    BBC News

A "dangerous" prison has seen significant improvements "at long last", inspectors have said.

An unannounced visit by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) to HMP Nottingham in January led to the institution's rating being upgraded from poor to "not sufficiently good".

In 2018 the category B jail become the first in the UK to be issued an urgent notification letter over self-inflicted deaths, and last year a report by the Independent Monitoring Board found it still had "significant problems" with violence.

However, while acknowledging violence levels are "still far too high" and noting four self-inflicted deaths had taken place since the last inspection, a report written by the Chief Inspector of Prisons found healthcare and relations between prisoners and staff had improved.

Peter Clarke said there was "still a huge amount of work to do", but hopes the "impressive progress" seen on the inspection can "mark a watershed in the troubled history" of the prison.

    Quote Message

Given the disappointing and indeed troubling history of poor inspections followed by inadequate responses, it was gratifying to find during this latest inspection that there had at long last been some real change at Nottingham... we came away with some confidence that the improvements could be sustained and built upon if the leadership and energy that was now evident could be maintained into the future."
