    BBC News

A spacecraft heading to Mercury will bid a final farewell to Earth as it makes its closest approach back to its home planet.

BepiColombo was launched in October 2018, and will take some photos at about 04:25 on Friday before it's slung back in the direction of Venus.

Among the equipment on board the craft is the Mercury Imaging X-ray Spectrometer, which was built by an international team led by the University of Leicester and will work with other instruments to analyse the planet's surface when it eventually arrives at Mercury in December 2025.

It won't be visible from the Northern Hemisphere, but its progress will be tracked by the European Space Agency's European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt.

    Quote Message

This is an important milestone for the mission, and hence for our instrument on board. We will not be talking to our instrument during the flyby, but some others will be operating and we look forward to some beautiful pictures of the Earth and moon."

  6. Consultant's warning over returning to work too soonpublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 8 April 2020

    PA Media

A Leicester doctor has warned Covid-19 patients not to rush back to work too soon after the main symptoms disappear.

Dr Jon Bennett, a respiratory consultant at Glenfield Hospital who has treated about 60 to 70 patients, said it can take several weeks to fully recover from the virus.

He said many factors affect recovery times, including a patient's age, other health conditions and the severity of their illness.

Dr Bennett himself is still recovering from coronavirus after suffering sleepless nights with muscle pain, a headache and mild cough.

"People suffer fatigue and lethargy and it can take six weeks to recover from it," Dr Bennett said.

"For some that have been to critical care, it can take longer and they may have permanent damage to their lungs.

"We do find some people want to get back to work too soon... but they were so knackered they had to go back home again.

"They've not been on 100% top form, so we've told them to go home and make a fuller recovery."

  14. Critical care beds trebled in Leicesterpublished at 09:56 British Summer Time 8 April 2020

    Amy Orton
    Local Democracy Reporter

The number of critical care beds in Leicester has trebled ahead of the next couple of weeks in the fight against coronavirus.

Health bosses have now penned a joint appeal to people in the county as we approach the expected peak.

Andy Williams, chief executive of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland's clinical commissioning groups, Rebecca Brown, acting chief executive of University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and Angela Hillery, chief executive of Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust have urged people to "continue to support us by staying home, protecting the NHS and saving lives".

The group said: "Tremendous work between the local NHS and its partners has helped transfer patients that are medically fit for discharge out of hospital and significantly increase the bed capacity available to us.

"We have also increased the number of critical care beds, used to care for the most seriously unwell patients, from a norm of around 50 to more than 150 – with the potential to increase that further depending on equipment availability."

    Hospital bed

According to the cohort, the number of hospital beds in the community has also increased from about 222 to close to 350.

They signed off by saying: "The weeks ahead may be among the most challenging we have ever known. We are working incredibly hard to make sure that we are as prepared as we can be for the expected surge in demand.

"Please continue to play your part by staying at home, protecting the NHS and saving lives. Together, we will get through this."
