It had already been a tough few years for Chesterfield, who were in League One as recently as 2017 but now find themselves in the fifth tier.

Owner Dave Allen has put in £700,000 to plug the financial gap at the club since January, with £100,000 lost in function room sales since 23 March.

"It's not been great anyway before all this happened," said Chesterfield company secretary Ashley Carson.

He told BBC Radio Sheffield: "It's hitting us at every angle and the future at the moment is very bleak.

"I think our balance is sat on around £15,000 and that's all we've got in the bank."

    BBC News

The company behind the Haymarket Theatre in Leicester has been declared insolvent, its board of directors have confirmed.

In a statement they said they have "started the process" of handing back control to Leicester City Council.

The theatre closed in 2007 but reopened two years ago following millions of pounds of investment.

The directors said they had been "hoping to enter our first profitable year" before the outbreak of coronavirus and the subsequent lockdown, which has left their financial outlook looking "bleak".

A number of other theatres across the country have already warned of the potential devastating impact of the pandemic on their finances and the industry.

    Gavin Bevis
    BBC News

People have been urged not to drive to the Peak District for days out over the bank holiday weekend.

It echoes calls nationally for day-trippers to resist the temptation to descend on popular tourist spots, despite the easing of lockdown restrictions.

Jo Dilley, managing director at Marketing Peak District and Derbyshire, said: "We know it's tempting to visit the places we've all missed so much, but until we can give you the warm welcome we all want, we ask visitors to think carefully before travelling to the area and to stay local if possible this bank holiday weekend.

"Following the renewed government guidelines, we've already had reports of large crowds at tourist hotspots where it was almost impossible to stay two metres apart, putting the safety of our local communities at risk."

  19. Council in 'pause situation' with Broadmarsh centrepublished at 08:30 British Summer Time 22 May 2020

    Local Democracy Reporter

Nottingham City Council has responded to concerns over whether construction work will resume on the redevelopment of Broadmarsh shopping centre.

Leader, councillor David Mellen, said he was "considering what else could take place" should the delays continue.

Retail giant Intu was already facing significant financial difficulties before the coronavirus crisis and this week said it was "reviewing the next step" for the project.

Mr Mellen said: "We're in a pause situation with the Broadmarsh centre, but we're also bearing in mind the fact that the company Intu is in some difficulties.

"We are in negotiations with them, looking at our own position in terms of contracts we've signed and being aware that not everything we planned can continue in the way we planned it.

"We know how crucial that site is to the whole of the south side redevelopment."

    Broadmarsh development

The Intu Broadmarsh, along with the bus station, car park and library, were set to be the centrepieces of a huge redevelopment of the south of Notingham, from the city centre to The Meadows.

Intu previously said it was "taking stock" and a spokesman added: "We know how important this is to Nottingham, and will give people an update as soon as we can."
