  4. 'Whole of Leicestershire was heading into tier two'published at 16:37 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2020

    BBC News

Leicestershire’s director of public health has said more restrictions were expected to be made in the county before Thursday's lockdown was announced.

Mike Sandys said: "We saw Charnwood go into tier two at the weekend and if it hadn't been for the national lockdown coming I'm pretty certain Blaby would have gone into tier two this week.

"I think there would have also been increasing pressure on me to consider tier two for the whole county and I don't think we were probably far off a conversation about tier three for Leicester city as well."

    Covid sign in Leicester

The second lockdown in England is due to last until at least 2 December.

Mr Sandys said Covid admissions were "going up rapidly" in Leicester's hospitals and the measures might be just enough to get the county back to where it was in the summer.

However, he said he suspects a third national lockdown could be on the cards for next year.

"We might get on top of it for a bit but I can see we might be having a similar conversation mid-January, early February - that might be another lockdown," he said.

Once we get into spring he said "normal life" might be possible, even if a vaccine doesn't come along.

A nine-year-old girl from Derbyshire turned a cancelled holiday into a creative tribute to Remembrance Day.

Emily Parry, from Smalley, was set to go to west Wales with her family over half-term, but after the trip was called off she began making poppies to sell to friends and family.

Taking advice from her grandmother and using material bought from local shops, she's raised more than £200 for the Royal British Legion.

Mum Emma said she's "immensely proud" of her efforts.

  10. Covid patients at hospitals 'more than double in fortnight'published at 09:46 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2020

    BBC Radio Derby

The number of patients being treated for Covid-19 at hospitals in Derby and Burton has more than doubled in the last fortnight, an NHS trust has said.

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust is currently treating more than 190 patients with coronavirus, with 14 in intensive care across its hospitals.

Medical director Dr James Crampton said the hospitals were currently treating "roughly around 75%" of the patients it would have treated at the peak of the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said eight people were being treated in intensive care at the Royal Derby Hospital, but there was plenty of capacity to treat the most ill patients with ventilators "when necessary".

    Royal Derby Hospital

Speaking about the impending national lockdown, he said: "We need to see what effect [it will have on] cases in the community, which will have a direct impact on the number of patients we admit.

"But we won't be seeing that effect probably for the next two or three weeks."

    Alex Regan
    BBC News

Nottinghamshire's police and crime commissioner says the county's police force needs "extra short-term funding" to tackle "irresponsible house parties".

Paddy Tipping has called on the Home Office to give Nottinghamshire Police additional funding to enforce tier three restrictions, and the impending lockdown on Thursday.

Mr Tipping added that many residents felt Covid-19 restrictions had been "badly handled", with "information and plans" changing "on an almost daily basis".

On Sunday the county's Chief Constable Craig Guildford called on universities to expel students who broke restrictions, after officers dished out £26,000 in fines over the weekend.

A government spokesperson said: "We are already providing the police - and local authorities - with £60m of additional funding to specifically step up their enforcement, in line with the growing risk from non-compliance.

"We will also provide extra financial support to help local authorities in areas designated as very high risk. Details of this funding will be announced in due course."

  19. Grandmother hit by car on day of father's deathpublished at 13:08 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2020

    BBC News

A grandmother has said she was "lucky" after she was flung into the air in a hit-and-run on the day of her father's death.

Nottinghamshire Police said Patricia Mellors, 64, was in the car park of Red Oaks Care Home, on Clipstone Road West, as she was visiting to clear her father's room following his death on 12 July last year.

Meanwhile, Sigits Ceburs was being pursued by officers after police saw his car being driven with false registration plates.

During the chase, Ceburs crashed into Ms Mellors, who suffered serious head injuries, a broken pelvis, ankle ligament damage and a number of cuts and bruises.

She has since made a full recovery.

Ms Mellors said: "I could have been dead. They could have been doing my father's and my funeral at the same time.

"The car hit me and threw me up in the air and he just drove off. He didn't stop.

"I'm lucky I did move to the side a bit because otherwise I think he would have gone over me."

Police said Ceburs then crashed his car into a fence in the driveway of the care home and ran off, but was arrested nearby.

The 38-year-old, of Recreation Street, Mansfield, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, fraudulent use of a registration, driving without a licence and driving without insurance at a previous hearing.

He was jailed for eight months, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £149 and banned from driving for 16 months at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday.

  20. Council leader 'encouraged' by city's decreasing Covid ratepublished at 12:24 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2020

    East Midlands Today

Nottingham City Council's leader has said he is optimistic the national four-week lockdown - starting on Thursday - will bring infection rates down if people follow the rules.

Councillor David Mellen says he is encouraged by recent reductions in infection rates in Nottingham, but added more needed to be done to prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed.

The whole of Nottinghamshire moved into the top tier of coronavirus restrictions prior to Prime Minister Boris Johnson's announcement on Saturday.

Mr Mellen said: "It will certainly decrease the flow of the virus and the transmission of the virus between people because we know most of the transmission is about people mixing indoors in social settings."
