  6. Covid-19: Mobile mortuaries to help struggling hospitalspublished at 10:30 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2021

    BBC Radio Leicester

Mobile storage units are being brought in across Leicestershire to cope with the growing number of dead bodies as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Simon Cole, chief constable of Leicestershire Police, said health officials, local authorites and officers are discussing ways of dealing with the rising number of deaths.

While praising most people for sticking to the rules, he urged the "small minority who are choosing to ignore the rules" to change their ways, pointing to the new £800 fines announced by Home Secretary Priti Patel as an extra enforcement measure.

    Quote Message

This week I’ve been in meetings about whether the mortuaries locally are going to be big enough to deal with the expected levels of deaths. It’s a pretty stark contrast with somebody who’s having a party, or one of the calls earlier this week [with] somebody who got their mates round for a curry. That’s just not a good idea at a time when our hospitals are really really struggling, and where there are a number of people who sadly are dying."

The trust says that 289 patients have died as a result of Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.

She said about 6% of the 4,200 staff at the trust were absent after contracting Covid-19.

She added that she had also been an outpatient at the trust, after contracting Covid-19 at Christmas.

She said: "I would say I had a pretty severe case - with breathing difficulties, a consistent cough (literally), a temperature that made me hallucinate, painful muscles, extreme fatigue, headache and sickness.

"I still have no sense of taste and a full day at work is like running a marathon."

In the post, she added: "We are also incredibly sad that 289 of our patients are now a ‘Covid-19-related death statistic’.

"They are of course much more than that - they are much-missed loved ones. They are grandparents, parents, sisters and brothers, nephews, nieces, cousins, workmates and friends.

"We are also mindful that more than 1,100 people have left our hospital in the last 10 months after care and treatment for coronavirus.

"That, and the start of the national vaccination programme - the biggest in history - are lights in the dark tunnel of lockdown."
