    Large amounts of building and household waste, including asbestos, have been dumped in Leicestershire.

    Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council said it is thought the items were fly-tipped at about 17:00 on Kirkby Road, Barwell, on Thursday.

    The authority said they suspect the "hazardous" asbestos and other items were dumped by a tradesperson who could have been working in the area.

    The council added it is considering installing CCTV due to the area becoming a fly-tipping "hot spot" and has appealed for information.

    A pub in Wirksworth is among four to have its name changed due to its "racist connotations".

    Brewery Greene King said the renaming of Black's Head was part of its strategy to "champion equality and diversity" as well as "support people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds".

    Nick Mackenzie, Greene King CEO, said: "It is important to acknowledge our history but just as important to work proactively to eradicate racism in our society today."

    The community will be asked to vote on a new name for the Black's Head along with three other pubs called The Black Boy.

    A man who police said repeatedly assaulted a woman, leaving her "utterly traumatised", has been jailed after he was found by officers hiding in a wheelie bin.

    Nottinghamshire Police said Vincent Jackson attacked the woman and cut the coolant pipe and fan belt to her car in East Markham on 25 October last year.

    The "terrified victim" fled to her neighbour's home and hid in the garden before calling 999, the force added.

    Jackson, who had a five-year restraining order banning him from attending the woman's home and contacting her, was found hiding in the rubbish bin and arrested.

    He was charged with assault by beating, criminal damage and breach of a restraining order.

    Jackson, 36, of Market Place, in Tattershall, Lincolnshire - who admitted the offences - was sentenced to 15 months in prison at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday.

    Det Con David Hikin said: "This was a horrific incident which saw a woman being assaulted numerous times.

    "The woman was left utterly traumatised following the continued assaults. She eventually left the house and hid behind a car, crying and distressed.

    "We'd like to thank the victim, who suffered bruising and reddening of the face and arm as a result of the ordeal, as well as her family and friends for their bravery and support."

    Two Akita dogs have been found after a burglary at a car breakers, police said.

    Derbyshire Police said they were called on Wednesday after the break-in on Gosforth Road, Allenton, where a "substantial quantity of goods" - including tools and car parts - had been stolen.

    The two dogs (below) were also missing from the premises, but the force has now confirmed the dogs are "safe and well".

    A man has been questioned under caution after a report that buzzards were killed in Nottinghamshire, police have confirmed.

    Officers said they have been working with the RSPB after being called on 12 January following concern to wildlife in the Kneeton area.

    All birds of prey are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and to intentionally kill or injure a protected bird could result in an unlimited fine and a prison sentence of up to six months.

    Insp Craig Berry said: "The incident was called into the RSPB following a report that the birds were killed and officers are now making further enquiries."

    A man in his 20s has died after a car hit a tree in Leicester.

    Police said the crash, which involved a dark-coloured Seat Leon, happened in Coleman Road, close to the junction with Avonside Drive in Evington, at about 23:30 GMT on Sunday.

    One man was pronounced dead at the scene and two other men were taken to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham.

    One man in his 30s is in a life-threatening condition and another man in his 20s is in a serious but stable condition.

    Leicestershire Police said parts of Coleman Road remain closed and have appealed for any witnesses or drivers with dashcam footage to come forward.
