    Redruth boss Steve Larkins praised his side's first half display as they overcame poor weather conditions to secure victory over Old Elthamians.

    Despite playing in a gale, the Reds raced into a 29-3 lead by the end of the first 40 minutes and scored an impressive five tries in the match.

    "The first half was unbelievable," Larkins told BBC Radio Cornwall. "We said against that howler of a wind we couldn't really kick it so we went out there to run it from everywhere."

    A convicted murderer has been jailed for a 'vicious' rape, external committed in west Cornwall 33 years ago.

    Nicholas Bertram, who's 56 and from Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, had been arrested on suspicion of the rape in Troon in 1982 but his then-girlfriend gave him a false alibi.

    Bertram later murdered his girlfriend and was jailed for the crime - now thanks to advances in DNA technology he's been convicted of the 1982 rape. Today at Truro Crown Court he was jailed for ten years and placed on the sex offenders register for life.

  6. Ryan Thomas Inquest: WPD workman fell to death from polepublished at 14:29

    A power company linesman died when the electricity pole he was climbing snapped at ground level, an inquest has heard. 

    Ryan Thomas, who was 28, had worked for Western Power Distribution (WPD) as an apprentice until his death in January 2013.

    Mr Thomas, a keen amateur sportsman, lived near Truro with his wife, Zara, and their baby, Maisy, who was eight-months-old when he died. The inquest in Truro is expected to last for two weeks.

  7. Commercial diver training in South West Waterspublished at 14:21

    More than a decade after professional diver training stopped at Fort Bovisand in Plymouth, a company has been set up to deliver advanced commercial courses and is believed to be the only one of its kind in England. 

    The nine-week course which takes place in waters off Devon and Cornwall, divers being put in pressurised chambers deep underwater.

    It provides qualifications and experience for offshore careers around the world, including jobs in the oil industry, renewable energy sector and ship repair work.

  8. Carers, not company, 'say package is ending'published at 14:12

    A couple who receive care at home have been told their arrangements are coming to an end. 

    George Mannell, who receives assistance for his wife, Tracey, said: "The care company didn't contact us at all. The ladies that came here said that they were finishing."

    Care company Taylors of Grampound said it made Cornwall Council aware of recruitment difficulties around three months ago and it was extremely sorry it was withdrawing services.

    Exeter manager Paul Tisdale said his side resorted to playing a unique formation in their FA Cup win over Port Vale following a number of injuries.

    The League Two side overcame their League One opponents to reach the third round for the first time in 10 years.

    "It was a bit of Rubik's cube trying to work out how we were going to play," Tisdale told BBC Radio Devon. "We created a way to play today, the players played to their ability and it was a really good team performance."

    Amphibious assault ship HMS Bulwark has returned to Plymouth after leading a major Royal Navy deployment in the Mediterranean.

    The ship, external led Exercise Cougar with the French Navy off Corsica, and was also involved in Exercise Trident Juncture - the largest NATO exercise for a decade. It also provided security for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta, and hosted the Queen on board during that meeting.

    Commanding officer Captain Nick Cooke-Priest said: “Our return to Plymouth marks the finale of a truly outstanding year for HMS Bulwark."

  11. 'Lost' Exmouth theatre used for Christmas productionpublished at 13:42

    A theatre space which closed nearly a decade ago on a former university campus is helping actors prepare for one of the region's top Christmas productions. 

    Robin Hood will be performed at Plymouth's Barbican Theatre, external in a joint production with Exeter-based company Le Navet Bete, external, but rehearsals will take place at the former Rolle College site in Exmouth, which was moth-balled by Plymouth University eight years ago.

    Production manager Alex White said: "It's a brilliant space - actually larger than the Barbican in terms of staging, so we are able to build all our sets there and run a full daily rehearsal schedule." 

  12. Shock at silt dumping in bay off Cornwallpublished at 13:31

    People living on the south coast of Cornwall say they're shocked to learn that waste dredged from Plymouth has been dumped in the sea off Lantic Bay. 

    The licensing authority said Lantic was suitable for small-scale disposal in the short-term, but locals are concerned.

    Lanteglos-by-Fowey parish councillor Dr Pat Moore said: "This is the first that I have have heard this is actually happening. I knew it was going to Whitsand Bay because that is a campaign (against dumping) that has been going on for some years. I did not know that it was coming here."

    Squirrels are thought to have caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage after gnawing through bell ropes at the top of a church tower

    Church workers discovered the damaged ropes and a grey squirrel at the top of St Erth Parish Church in Cornwall.

    Peter Pascoe, tower captain, said a church bell muffle had also disappeared. He said the rodents had caused about £400 worth of damage.

    Truro City boss Steve Tully says he is impressed with his players, despite their 11-game unbeaten run in National League South coming to an end.

    The White Tigers lost 2-1 at high-flying Maidstone United as they tasted league defeat for the first time since the end of August.

    "We're really disappointed with the result, but not by the way we played," Tully told BBC Radio Cornwall. "I'm delighted that our players kept going, we could have nicked a point."
