    Firefighters have rescued a pig called Dorothy who was stuck in a river at Grampound in Cornwall.

    A crew from St Austell worked with a vet to put a harness around the animal and lift it out of the river earlier this morning.

    A student has pleaded for the return of her prosthetic hand after losing it on a night out.

    Amelia Welch, who was born with a congenital malformation in her right hand, said she had gone to Oceana nightclub after a Plymouth University ball on 3 June.

    "I do take it off to go to the toilet, but most of the time when I go out I put it on because it gives me confidence," she said. 

    "I must have been drunk when I took it off and forgot about it. 

    "I went back to halls with friends and went to bed and the next day I realised that I did not have it."

    An international money launderer and fraudster who has gone on the run with his family could be in Egypt, according to police.

    Peter Gifford, 49, was convicted in his absence at Truro Crown Court in April and sentenced to six years in jail and his partner Penelope Lawton, 52, was previously convicted of mortgage fraud and sentenced to three years in jail.

    Det Sgt Martin Skinner said the couple, who featured on the Crimewatch Roadshow, were thought to be in Egypt with their teenage daughters.

    People living in and around the village of Crowlas in West Cornwall say they're hopeful a proposal for a bypass will get the go-ahead.

    Highways England is preparing to decide whether a bypass from St Erth to the Newtown Roundabout should be included in its second Road Investment Strategy programme starting in 2020.

    Local campaigner Joe Poynton said "the whole idea of the economic regeneration for the area is to get better connectivity" but accepts the village is "up against bids" from other parts of the country.

    Investors in Flybe seem to have been underwhelmed by the company's announcement this morning that it's back in profit. 

    By late morning today the Exeter-based airline's shares were down around 6%, after it reported a pre-tax profit of £2.7m. That figure compares with last year's pre-tax loss of £35m. 

    The airline claimed today that the latest figures represent the first time it's achieved profitability since floating in 2010. Investors however may recall that this time two years ago Flybe was also announcing what it called at the time a "return to profitability".

    The father-in-law of a woman having an affair with a Tory MP has quit his role in the Conservative Association.

    Philip Bunt accused Steve Double MP of "hypocrisy" towards family values.

    Mr Bunt - who helped engineer Mr Double's victory in St Austell and Newquay - said the politician had "misled" voters with his actions.

    Mr Double has expressed his "deep regret" over his affair with his aide Sarah Bunt - Mr Bunt's daughter-in-law. Mr Bunt stepped down as deputy chairman of the St Austell and Newquay Conservative Association after the scandal broke.

    The Conservative MP for Newton Abbot Anne Marie Morris says "there is nothing deceiving" about the £350m figure which the Leave campaign claims would be saved for the NHS if Britain left the European Union.

    "If we want a strong economy, so that we can have the best NHS in the world, then we need to do the right thing to achieve that, and in my view that is to vote to leave", Ms Morris told BBC Radio Devon.

    Sarah Wollaston, the Tory MP for Totnes, has quit the Leave campaign after claiming the £350m figure "simply isn't true".

    Seventeen bottlenose dolphins were seen and photographed off the Cornish coast yesterday.

    Conservationists said the pod included adults and juveniles and were in a more acrobatic mood than usual.

    Plans for a multimillion-pound landmark visitor attraction in Plymouth will go before the city council today.

    Planning officers are recommending proposals are approved for the centre, which will be built at the city's Museum and Art Gallery. 

    The estimated £34m cost will come from grants, Heritage Lottery Funding and business sponsors. It's hoped the centre will bring in about 300,000 visitors a year.

  18. Man left with serious injuries after bicycle crashpublished at 16:40 British Summer Time 9 June 2016

    A man was left with serious head, face and internal injuries after a bicycle hit him in Bideford.

    The casualty, 54, was walking home along North Road after watching football at a local pub on 5 May between 19:30 and 22:00, when he was hit by a cyclist travelling down a steep hill.

    He spent several days in hospital and will require ongoing treatment for his injuries.

    Police are trying to find a number of witnesses who helped the man in the area of Lime Grove. The cyclist is yet to be traced.
