    A rare tiger cub born in a Devon zoo has had some of the same vaccines you would give a normal cat, a vet says.

    The 10-week cub at Paignton Zoo is the first born at the wildlife park since 2009. Mother Shakira gave birth to three cubs on 31 May, but two subsequently died.

    Staff said the cub had the "same routine check-up as a domestic kitten and received the same vaccinations".

    Zoo vet Ghislaine Sayers said: "He had a normal cat vaccine to protect against diseases such as cat flu and feline enteritis; and, like kittens, was wormed and treated against external parasites ... We also micro-chip, as you would a pet. He appears to be very healthy."

    The three shipwrecks given protection by the UK government are among about 11,000 vessels known to have been wrecked in England's waters in the late 18th Century.

    However, few of these have been found - other than important trading vessels, such as those used by the East India Company.

    Axe Boat - The earliest of the wrecks was built between 1400 and 1640 and would have been used for trade or fishing from the then major port of Axmouth.

    Sally - The larger wreck at Westward Ho! ran aground on the sands in 1769, while bound from Oporto in Portugal to Bristol with a cargo of port wine.

    A Severn Trow - A small merchant ship working locally in the Bristol Channel coastline about 200 years ago appears to have been driven ashore in a storm.

    Two spotted eagle ray pups born at Plymouth's National Marine Aquarium will go on display to visitors later this year, staff say.

    The male and female - as yet unnamed - pups were born at Plymouth's National Marine Aquarium following a seven-year project in what was described as the first such births in the UK.

    Staff said the twins are currently in the aquarium’s Atlantic Ocean acclimation tank, "where they are getting used to their new surroundings ... before they go on full display to visitors later this autumn."

  8. Developer and council cancel Oldway Mansion revamp agreementpublished at 17:18

    A Devon council and developers have terminated an agreement to revamp Torbay's Oldway Mansion.

    The building has been standing empty for more than three years despite a contract between the developer and Torbay Council to turn it into a hotel. Developer Oldway Mansion Ltd had been suing the council for £8m in a row over leases, seeking damages and costs.

    The council said the parties had not been able to reach agreement "on the specifics of the dispute", but had "put differences aside for the benefit of the mansion". It added: "The parties have therefore agreed to end the current court proceedings and terminate the development agreement."

    A number of boats have "got caught" in Hayle Harbour because of silt, a local adviser says.

    The channel into the port used to be kept clear through a process called sluicing but that hasn't been done since the 1980s. 

    John Bennett, chairman of the Hayle Harbour Advisory Committee, said: "Coming across the bar at the entrance to the harbour is dangerous. You get caught on it, you get turned sideways and boats get flipped over, and we've had a death."

    A 25-year-old woman has died in a road crash in Okehampton at the weekend, police have confirmed, external.

    The woman was the front seat passenger in a Ford Focus which collided with a Peugeot 206 on the A3079 near Thorndon Cross at about 08:35 on Saturday. 

    She was pronounced dead at the scene. The female driver of the Ford was taken to hospital by ambulance.

    Three shipwrecks given legal protection have "added significance" due to their easy visibility to the public, according to a maritime archaeologist at Historic England.

    Mark Dunkley, said: "The fact that they're often visible to the public gives them a whole added significance as it's quite rare that such old maritime fabric can be seen by anyone who isn't a diver."

    "Zombie killer knives" were inspired by horror films and computer games and designed to create maximum damage.

    But a new legislation will mean it's illegal to sell or import them after an increasing number have been found in the hands of gangs.

    The knives, described as "horrendous weapons" by the Home Office have blades, serrated edges and logos promoting violence. But Newsbeat's been told the ban could make them more of an "exclusive" status symbol to some people.

    Home Office minister and Truro MP Sarah Newton said that, although not a huge number of zombie knives have been recovered by police, they had noticed an increase. She said: "It's a horrendous looking weapon, designed to intimidate."

    Police are appealing for witnesses after a serious crash on the A38 near Liskeard.

    At 13:45 on Thursday a blue Kia Ceed left the road and crashed into a tree injuring a 69-year-old woman passenger, external. She remains in a serious but stable condition at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

    The crash happened on the A38 near Castle Motors on the Cornwall-bound carriageway. Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

    An "extensive sea and land search" is being carried out in the Lynton area for a missing man from Guildford, Devon and Cornwall Police say, external.

    Officers said Andrew O'Reilly was reported missing on Sunday morning "after failing to return to where he was camping" in the Devon town. He checked into a farm campsite on Monday 8 August and has not been seen since, they added. His tent and car were still at the site, police said. 

    Coastguards and lifeboats are assisting in searches around the coast at Lynmouth, Lynton and Ilfracombe. A police dog unit, police helicopter plus the Exmoor and Dartmoor Search and Rescue Teams were also involved in the search, police said.

    A coach which crashed on a bend in Cornwall, killing two women, was travelling so quickly "it was scary", a court has heard.

    Fifty-nine-year-old Margaret Luxton and Carol Muldoon, 68, died when their coach crashed on a steep hill at Morval on 13 May 2014. Fellow passenger Maggie Morris, also on the 50-strong Age Concern trip from Exmouth to Looe, told Truro Crown Court the vehicle was "so fast coming into the bend, it was scary". 

    Prosecutors said 59-year-old Martin Chun, of Whitestone, near Exeter, made a series of calls on a hands-free mobile during the trip, including an eight-minute call at the time of the crash. He denies causing death by dangerous driving, or death by careless driving, and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The trial continues.
