A large team of about 50 or so engineers are dealing with so-called "washouts" on trains lines, where ballast under rails has been washed away, causing a severe problem.

Network Rail Operations Manager Steve Hawkins said: "On the main line between Penzance and Paddington, there have been seven washouts ... leaving rails just dangling in the air. Some of our electronic point equipment is also affected.

"The plan is to put ballast back in and get trains running again. We're planning to have it all back on the main line within 48 hours.

"The Barnstaple line has also suffered a washout. That might take longer to fix - we're concentrating on the main lines first."

  19. Cowley Bridge rail track flood barriers 'overwhelmed'published at 09:06 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2016

    Andrew Segal
    Local Live

Trains were stopped in Devon on Monday night after flood barriers "were overwhelmed" at Cowley Bridge, near Exeter, Network Rail says.

    Cowley Bridge

Julian Burnell, from the track operator, said engineers had been out to inspect the area.

He said: "The track is slightly washed away, but not too severe. But it does means we're not going to be able to run trains through it for the next 48 hours.

"A couple of years ago, we moved a lot of our electronic kit - we moved it up higher [away from possible flooding]. That means we can get services running again a lot quicker than we could."
