    Cornish rugby legend Richard Sharp has been offering some words of wisdom to Jack Nowell as he prepares to become a British and Irish Lion.

    Exeter Chiefs and England winger Nowell has been selected for the Lions squad for this summer's tour of New Zealand.

    Sharp played for the Lions in the 1962 tour to South Africa (some of whom are pictured), but had to work shifts at South Crofty tin mine to pay for his trip.

    "I do not think that Warren Gatland would want one of his star players to do that now," Sharp told BBC Radio Cornwall.

    He said that, when he joined the tour, he was given 10 shillings (50p) a day "pocket money". It’s been reported that the current Lions players could earn up to £70,000 each as a tour fee.

    The latest government figures reveal there are about 300 vacancies in children's social care roles across the South West. 

    In Devon and Torbay, about a fifth of posts are vacant. In Plymouth, every one in 20 roles is empty.

    The government is now running a special bursary scheme offering potential recruits a 14-month fast-track programme. 

    Cornwall Council has been running its own trainee scheme, but is now joining forces with authorities in Devon, Plymouth and Torbay. 

    Cornwall Council said its its own trainee scheme had brought in 33 new social workers over five years, and it hoped to build on that by taking part in the government initiative.

    Truro City manager Lee Hodges said he was "chuffed to bits" after his side sealed safety with a 2-1 win over Hemel Hempstead on Saturday.

    As the final whistle went at Treyew Road, Truro were not mathematically safe, but Gosport conceded a stoppage-time equaliser which keeps the Cornish side in National League South.

    "It's been a very long season and I think I can sleep well," Hodges told BBC Radio Cornwall. "I'm chuffed to bits for everyone at the club, for the supporters, to the chairman and to the players."

    Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey and Keren Woodward (who lives in Cornwall) - the biggest girl band of the 80s - have announced a 15-date winter UK tour, including performing in Plymouth in November.

    Olympic hockey gold medallist Giselle Ansley scored as Surbiton won their fourth consecutive national title.

    Ansley, who is from Kingsbridge, helped the London-based side win 3-1 against Holcombe to be crowned champions for the fourth consecutive year.

    A teenager whose car collided with a concrete post, resulting in the death of his teenage passenger, was driving "in a manner that was obviously dangerous", prosecutors say.

    Sophie Taylor, 16, from Falmouth, died after the crash in the town in January 2016.

    At Truro Crown Court, prosecutor Philip Lee said defendant Coree Lee Amonn's driving included an "element of showing off" and he was "was driving too fast to impress his two young passengers". Miss Taylor and her twin sister, Aimee, were both in the vehicle.

    The 19-year-old denies causing death by dangerous driving. The trial continues.

    A formal bid has been made for Bodmin Moor to become an International Dark Sky Landscape.

    A decision on the submission by Cornwall Council and Caradon Observatory is expected from the International Dark-Sky Association in June.

    If the bid is successful, the designation will formally recognise the exceptional quality of the night sky over Bodmin Moor and help protect it from light pollution.

    The RSPCA says dog owners should be more conscious of the dangers of leaving dogs in vehicles.  

    It comes after a man in St Ives broke a car window last week because he thought a dog inside needed rescuing. Clive Oxley said he'd do it again and he believed that, if he hadn't, the dog would have died. 

    Holly Barber, from the RSPCA, said: "It's tragic people having dogs and leaving them in hot cars. It's something we come across time and time again during the summer months. 

    "We campaign about it on a regular basis, but it still happens and we need to change people's attitudes."

    A man who stabbed his cousin in the neck during a crack cocaine smoking session "saturated" himself with drugs and then launched a "wholly unprovoked attack".

    At Truro Crown Court, 34-year-old Aaron Semmens admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent on Michael Caddy in Penzance in February after stabbing him five times with a 12cm kitchen knife.

    Jailing Semmens, from Treveneth Crescent, Newlyn, for eight years, Judge Robert Linford said: "He could very very easily have died. The wounds penetrated vital parts and were very close to dividing his carotid artery, which would have led to his death."

    Anyone who may have lost their false teeth in Torquay last week may have to wing it trying to recover them in one case.

    The Spotted Newton Abbot page on Facebook, external said that it was asked to post a picture after someone's false teeth were found on a bench on Torquay Harbour on 21 April.

    The post added: "Unfortunately anyone missing them will need to contact the seagull as he flew away with them!"

    Devon-born boxer Tommy Langford was beaten by Avtandil Khurtsidze with a fifth-round stoppage as the Georgian set up a bout against WBO world champion Billy Joe Saunders.

    The fight was for the WBO middleweight interim title, with the winner becoming Saunders' mandatory challenger.

    Langford had backed himself to go on and beat Saunders, but he was floored with a fierce left-hook by 37-year-old Khurtsidze at Leicester Arena. 

    The 29-year-old was undefeated in 18 contests and captured the British title in his last bout.

    A man has been jailed for stabbing his cousin in the neck during a crack cocaine smoking session.

    Thirty-four-year-old Aaron Semmens pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent on Michael Caddy in Penzance on 23 February. 

    He stabbed him five times in the neck, face and throat with a 12cm kitchen knife while shouting "give me what you've got", Truro Crown Court heard. 

    Judge Robert Linford described the attack by Semmens, from Treveneth Crescent, Newlyn, as "savage". He was jailed for eight years.

    A transformed Tate St Ives will reopen in the middle of October, it's been announced.

    A four-year building project will have doubled the space for showing art, adding almost 600 sq-m of galleries, and have created new studios for learning activities. 

    Gallery managers said major exhibitions of the works of painter Patrick Heron and sculptor Rebecca Warren will be on show.

    Although according to a press release, it will be a one-off, Woodward did hint there may be other plans afoot.

    "The tour is the main thing," she said. "But we have talked about doing a single together, which would be good."

    Plymouth Leander swimmer Ben Proud broke two records on his way to two gold medals at the British Swimming Championships in Sheffield over the weekend.

    Proud, who no longer trains with Leander but was swimming under their name, beat his own British record as he took 50m freestyle victory before breaking another national record to win the 50m butterfly.

    Police are investigating a series of arson attempts in St Austell. 

    Firefighters were called to three separate incidents in the town on Sunday afternoon. 

    All involved the deliberate ignition of grass, hedges and trees, emergency services said.
