    The driver of a car that crashed killing a 16-year-old girl, told police he knew the road was "scary", a court has heard.

    Coree Lee Amonn, 19, was driving twin sisters, Sophie and Aimee Taylor, on Castle Drive in Falmouth in the early hours of 3 January 2016.

    Sophie, who was sitting in the back seat, died after the car lost control and hit a concrete post.

    Truro Crown Court heard how he admitted going over the 30mph speed limit.

    Prosecutor, Philip Lee, said: "The defendant told police 'I was doing between 30mph and 35mph. I never go above 40mph on that road. I know what the road is like, it's scary.'"

    Mr Amonn denies causing death by dangerous driving. He has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of causing death by careless driving.

    The trial continues.

    Experts say a common in East Devon badly damaged by fire yesterday will take 10 years to recover. 

    More than 100 acres of Woodbury Common were destroyed in the fire yesterday afternoon, which also saw five firefighters injured tackling the blaze. 

    The fire service has renewed an appeal for anyone using the land to be careful after a recent spell of dry weather. The cause of this fire is believed to be accidental. One fire crew is still on site this lunchtime damping down to try to ensure the fire does not re-ignite.

    A carcass suspected to be that of a basking shark that's washed up in Cornwall is so big that people have been calling it a whale.

    The shark - estimated to be 25ft long - appeared at Chapel Point, just South of Portmellon in south Cornwall on Saturday but is thought to have been dead for a while.

  9. Woodbury Common fire: Gorse blaze at a 'critical time of year' for wildlifepublished at 13:07 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    A gorse fire in east Devon has been described as shocking and bleak, and happened at a "critical time of year", local wildlife experts say.

    At its height, about 20 fire engines plus support appliances were at the scene on Woodbury Common on Sunday. Five firefighters were injured in tackling the blaze and it's thought up to 120 acres have been damaged. 

    It's not known how the blaze started, but it's not believed to be suspicious.

    Steve Hussey, from the Devon Wildlife Trust, said: "It's the time when ground-nesting birds are nesting and you've also got migrants coming in. 

    "Nightjars, skylarks, Dartford warblers, stonechats - all these birds will be affected, and also the reptiles, which are probably less swift in their movement. It's a really important place for species such as common lizards and adders too."

    Police in Plymouth are trying to trace two men who conned their way into the home of a man in his 80s in what's thought to be an unsuccessful distraction burglary.

    Officers said, external the pair persuaded their victim to let them into his home in Walters Road, St Budeaux, at about 13:45 last Thursday, and that "whilst one man kept him talking, the other man went upstairs and made a search".

    Although nothing was taken "on this occasion", officers said they were urging all householders "not to let any workmen or callers into their properties without a prior appointment and without seeing valid identification".

    The first man was described as white, about 5ft 7ins tall, about 35-years-old, slim, and wearing a dark long-sleeved top and blue trousers. The second man was white, about 50-years-old, also 5ft 7ins tall, and of thin build, and wearing dark clothing.

    There was disappointment for Devon's Jo Pavey in the London Marathon after the British five-time Olympian was forced to retire at the 16-mile mark.

    The 43-year-old mother-of two was aiming to secure qualification for the 2017 World Championships when she raced on Sunday. She had needed to finish as one of the top two British women and run a time of two hours and 36 minutes or better. 

    The Exeter-based athlete said on Twitter, external that she "wanted so much to carry on but from about 13 miles my hamstring kept cramping too much".

    She added: "I feel so disappointed but will keep running on."

    Devon and Cornwall Police say that tougher punishments for the most serious speeding offences now in force in England and Wales will make a difference.

    Under new guidelines, external, fines for drivers caught doing 51mph in a 30mph zone or 101mph on a motorway will start from 150% of weekly income, rather than the previous level of 100%. Motoring groups have broadly welcomed the new guidelines for magistrates.

    Ch Insp Adrian Leisk, head of roads policing, said: "This is trying to get people to realise that there's a consequence to their behaviour and they should reflect on the risks of their driving, reflect on the risks they pose to other road users, and reduce their speeds accordingly.

    Plymouth-born diver Tom Daley won bronze in the 10m platform on the final day of the Diving World Series event in Windsor, Canada.

    The result means Daley, 22, finishes third overall in the four-leg World Series with three bronzes and a silver.

    China's Chen Aisen has won every leg of the event to take overall victory.

    On Saturday, Briton Jack Laugher won 3m springboard gold, while compatriots Tonia Couch and Lois Toulson won bronze in the women's 10m synchro on Friday.

    The driver of a car that crashed, killing his teenage passenger, ignored pleas to slow down, a court has heard. 

    Sophie Taylor, 16, from Falmouth was killed in the accident on a scenic road in the town in the early hours of 3 January 2016.

    Prosecuting, Mr Philip Lee told the court the defendant was driving his VW Golf on Castle Drive, and was increasing in speed when he lost control on a right hand bend.

    The car hit the kerb and then collided with a concrete post, fatally injuring Miss Taylor who was in the back seat.

    Her twin sister, Aimee, was also in the car, in the front passenger seat. She told police she had asked him to slow down but he ignored her.

    Coree Lee Amonn, 19, has pleaded not guilty to causing death by dangerous driving at Truro Crown Court.

    The trial continues.

    Fire crews managed to stop a gorse blaze spreading from one side of a main road to the other while they were battling it.

    At its height, about 20 fire engines plus support appliances were at the scene on Woodbury Common on Sunday. Five firefighters were injured. 

    Crews have spent the night damping down at the scene. It's thought about 100 acres of heathland was destroyed. 

    Much of the affected area has been left black and charred.

    We heard a rumour - and, for once, it turned out to be true: the original line-up of Bananarama have reunited.

    Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey and Keren Woodward (who lives in Cornwall, pictured left above) were the biggest girl band of the 80s, scoring hits including Venus, Shy Boy and Love In The First Degree.

    Although they scored 10 top 10 hits, the trio never toured before Fahey quit to form Shakespears Sister in 1988. The split was acrimonious, but the members recently reconciled and have announced a 15-date UK tour for winter.

    The bar area of a Torquay hotel where a fire broke out at the weekend has suffered what has been described as "significant" damage, and the rest of the building has been affected by smoke, emergency services say.

    Investigations are under way after the serious blaze at the Bancourt Hotel which broke out in the early hours of Sunday. Three people were injured and about 80 evacuated from the building. 

    More than 100 young farmers were staying at the hotel for an annual convention and had to spend the rest of the night sleeping on the floor of the Riviera Centre. 

    The manager of a local garage said there were about six fire appliances at the scene from about 00:30.
