Police are trying to trace the owner of a military medal, or their family, after it was fished out of the water in Devon by officers.

The General Service medal - issued to Private BC Smith, bearing the number 4143 - was recently discovered at the bottom of the River Exe during a routine operation by the Devon and Cornwall Police dive team, officers said.

The medal was issued after 1952 because it bears the head of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

Constable Nigel Sobey said: "We know how valuable these medals can be to the owner. Having pulled it from the murky depths, it would be rewarding to be able to present it once again to its rightful owner. At the moment it looks dulled by age and appears to have been laying deep below the water for some time."

Venues across Cornwall are they're reviewing their security measures in the wake of the attack at Manchester Arena.

The Eden Project, near St Austell in Cornwall, said "the well-being and safety of our visitors and concert-goers is uppermost in our minds" and it was working closely with police and relevant authorities to get the best possible advice.

The Hall for Cornwall in Truro (pictured) said that the "safety of our customers and staff are an utmost priority".

It added that it was taking advice from theatre membership organisation UK Theatre and "will continue to work alongside them, and other venues, in reviewing our security and emergency procedures".

Police have said young sexual assault victims will be listened to and believed while commenting on a man from Liskeard being jailed more than a decade after his first victim came forward.

Adrian Jewell, from Joan Moffat Close, was jailed for 19 years at Exeter Crown Court after being convicted of five rapes, two sexual assaults and voyeurism of three girls aged between 12 and 18 between 2006 and 2015 in Devon.

Devon and Cornwall Police admitted, external it was "10 years since the first victim came forward" and that "sadly, due to a lack of evidence at the time, the investigation did not reach a court room". It was only after the other two victims provided further evidence that the case went forward, the force added.

Det Con Rochelle Andrews said she hoped that the result gives "other victims of sexual abuse the confidence to know that if they do come forward they will be believed, treated fairly and justice will be served".

A University of Exeter lecturer in Islamic studies says Muslim communities across the country will condemn the Manchester attack because it is an "abomination" of the Koran's teachings.

Dr Mustafa Baig said: "The Koran explicitly prohibits the taking of innocent life, while Islamic law categorically instructs that children must be protected in all circumstances.

"As someone who was born and raised in Manchester, I am particularly concerned about the impact that this could have on the long-established and cordial community relations in the city, and throughout the UK.

"Any reprisal attacks and abuse of Muslims, which, sadly, we are already seeing, only serve the purpose of the perpetrator which was to create hatred, violence and division."

Vets in Cornwall say the increasing cost of antidotes used to treat animals bitten by adders is not the only difficulty their use presents.

The anti-venom had to be stocked under special licence, but there were fewer manufacturers, vets said. It also used to cost about £30 a time but is now about £500 per dose because of a shortage of supply.

Small animal vet Chris Gardner, who owns the St Clements Group across Cornwall, added that there was another problem they had to deal with.

He said: "It's a very expensive drug, but it also usually comes with a relatively short shelf life on it, probably a year or so at most."

Adders are the only wild venomous snakes, external found in the UK.

Police have been called to another incident in Cornwall involving a man reportedly wielding a knife.

A 54-year-old man from Falmouth was arrested on suspicion of affray after armed officers dealt with an incident on Market Strand in the town at about 15:00.

Earlier police said they arrested a man for affray after being called to North Street in Marazion at about 23:45 on Tuesday after reports that a man had a knife.

A paedophile from Cornwall who has been jailed for 19 years has been convicted more than a decade after his first victim came forward.

Forty-two-year-old Adrian Jewell, from Joan Moffat Close in Liskeard, was jailed at Exeter Crown Court after being convicted of five rapes, two sexual assaults and voyeurism between 2006 and 2015. His female victims were aged between 12 and 18 at the time of the offences, which took place in Devon.

Devon and Cornwall Police admitted, external it was "10 years since the first victim came forward" and that "sadly, due to a lack of evidence at the time, the investigation did not reach a court room".

It was only after the other two victims provided further evidence that the case went forward, the force added.

Officers added they hoped "this sentence allows the three victims to finally move forward with their lives".

People travelling up to Twickenham on Saturday for the rugby clash between Exeter Chiefs and the Wasps are being advised there will be extra security in place at the stadium.

Security is being increased across the country as a result of the Manchester attack.

The Chiefs said on their website that police had implemented extra measures for Saturday’s Premiership Final, with kick-off due at 14:30. People have also been advised "not to bring bags".

The Rugby Football Union said: "We have been operating enhanced security measures for some time and will continue to do so for both match days this weekend. We work closely with the police for all our events at the stadium."

A man arrested after a robbery in a shop in Hayle has appeared in court.

The town's Spar store was raided at about 07:45 on Monday. No-one was injured but the incident sparked a police manhunt in the town.

A 33-year-old man from the town has appeared before magistrates in Truro, charged with stealing £150 and taking a motor vehicle without owner's consent.

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Truro Crown Court in June.

An elderly woman has been taken to hospital with minor burns and suffering from smoke inhalation after the gas supply of a cooker caught fire in a cottage near Tavistock.

Firefighters said, external they were called to Longcross Cottages in Longcross at about 11:30 after the fire broke out in the LPG supply of the ground floor kitchen.

The supply was isolated and removed but the fire damaged about 80% of the kitchen and smoke-damaged the remainder of the property, fire crews said.

The cause is believed to be accidental.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of affray after police investigated reports of a man being seen with a knife in a west Cornwall town.

Officers said they were called to North Street in Marazion at about 23:45 on Tuesday and detained a man.

The police watchdog is investigating the death of a man after officers who were called to reports of him injuring himself with a knife in Falmouth deployed a Taser, it has confirmed.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission said officers from the Devon and Cornwall force were called to reports of a man with a knife at about 21:00 in Langton Road.

He was then stunned by officers with an electro-shock weapon in what Devon and Cornwall Police called an "unfolding dynamic incident".

The IPCC said it ''had been told that during the incident that followed, the man sustained self-inflicted knife injuries, and was taken to hospital where he subsequently died.

"The investigation follows a mandatory referral from Devon and Cornwall Police and IPCC investigators have been deployed."

More than 350 speeding motorists have been caught by police during a two-day traffic operation in Newquay, including one doing more than 100mph, officers say.

Officers said, external the operation, on 16-17 May, was "mounted in response to community concerns about speeding motorists and antisocial driving".

The highest speed recorded was 101mph on a 70mph road, and a vehicle which should have had its speed restricted to 60mph was caught doing 89mph.

A number of drivers were also caught with having no road tax and a number of vehicles were also seized for having no insurance, police said.

A sculpture of music icon David Bowie is to capture the musician at various stages in his career, not just as Ziggy Stardust, its creator says.

The project, which includes a newly-revealed life-size figure of the legendary singer, is being created by sculptor Andrew Sinclair, from Bondleigh, near Okehampton in Devon.

He said: "What I wanted to do with this was create not just a Ziggy Stardust character, because he was so many different things to so many different people. I can't think of another star that changed himself so much."

An online campaign raised more than £100,000 to pay for the piece, which will be installed in Aylesbury, where the singer had strong connections.
