    The Islamic Society based at the Penryn university campus in Cornwall has won the "best cultural and faith society" in national awards.

    It was recognised for its participation in Islamophobia Awareness Month and World Hijab Day.

    The group - part of the Falmouth and Exeter Students' Union - picked up the accolade at the National Societies Awards in Nottingham.

    The Wild Doc Soc in Penryn also won "best hobby and interest society".

    A young mother has had her father's ashes stolen while on holiday in Cornwall.

    Joanne Young carried her father's ashes in a locket in her wallet which was stolen along with her handbag on Monday as she fed ducks with her two young children.

    Mrs Young, from Bath, had taken her family on holiday to Perranporth because she had gone there with her father, John Hadley, every year throughout her childhood.

    She said: "The money isn't important to me but my dad's ashes mean the world."

    Vets in Cornwall say the cost of the antidotes used to treat animals bitten by adders has soared to about £500 per dose because of a shortage of supply.

    The anti-venom used to cost about £30 a time.

    The drug has to be stocked under special licence, but there were now fewer manufacturers, vets said.

    Adders are the only wild venomous snakes, external found in the UK.

    People going to shows at Plymouth Pavilions should arrive in plenty of time "to allow time for any security checks", bosses say.

    Music, tourist and sports venues across the South West are reviewing security measures in the wake of the attack at Manchester Arena.

    Plymouth Pavilions said it had already tightened security because of the Paris attacks in 2015, but added it had put additional precautions in place.

    It said: "We would like to reassure our customers that their safety is always our number one priority."

    A man has died after wounding himself with a knife in Falmouth and being Tasered by police.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said officers were called to reports of a man with a knife in Langton Road at about 21:00 on Tuesday and had to deploy the electric stun gun "due to the unfolding dynamic incident".

    The man was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, where he was later pronounced dead. His next of kin have been informed. The road remains cordoned off.

    Officer said the case had been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission "as per statutory guidelines".

    The IPCC said it was told that "during the incident... the man sustained self-inflicted knife injuries".

    A new exhibition is on show in Honiton for anyone with not so much green fingers as maybe... green knitting needles.

    The life-size garden is on show at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery, with plenty of flowers, a pond, animals, insects, scarecrows and a good selection of vegetables, all knitted.

    It's been created by more than 5,000 volunteers and is part of a national tour. Local community groups are being invited to add to the collection too.

    It's open until 24 June

    Uncapped Exeter Chiefs full-back Phil Dollman has been called up to the Wales squad for the two-Test tour against Tonga and Samoa in June.

    The 32-year-old former Newport Gwent Dragon will replace the injured Rhun Williams in the squad.

    Dollman is due to represent the Chiefs in Saturday's Premiership final against Wasps following their last-gasp victory over defending champions Saracens.

    Three people have suffered stab wounds in assaults in Teignmouth, police say.

    Officers said, external they found a 17-year-old girl with a facial injury from a "bladed object", a 19-year-old woman had a wound to her hand and a male close by suffered a stab wound. The incident happened in Bitton Park Road at about 18:30 on Tuesday.

    None of the injuries was thought to be life-threatening but officers said they wanted to "reassure the community that we are treating the incident very seriously".

    A 19-year-old man from Torquay was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and remains in police custody.

    We've all heard the excuse "the dog ate my homework". But have you had to get some new travel documents because "the dog ate my passport"?. One local rugby player has.

    Plymouth Albion player Matt Shepherd found his pet pooch pigged out on his passport ahead of an overseas tour.

    Seven-month-old cocker spaniel Mr Boots (pictured right, next to Honey) destroyed the document less than two weeks before a flight to Spain for a two-match England Counties tour. The former St Austell and Redruth back was then forced to make an eight-hour round trip to south Wales to get a new passport.

    "When I got back I saw pieces of paper on the floor and didn't know what it was. Then I saw him on the bed with the passport in his mouth," he said. "I was in shock, I didn't know what to do."

    However "the authorities agreed to speed things up and help out as I was representing my country," he said.

    A man arrested after a robbery at a shop in Hayle is due in court.

    The town's Spar store was cordoned off after the raid at about 07:45 on Monday, which sparked a major police search of the area. No-one was injured.

    Police said a 33-year-old man from the town had been charged with robbery and taking a motor vehicle without owner's consent, and was due to appear before magistrates in Truro later.

    The Cornish Pirates have further strengthened their squad for next season's RFU Championship with the signing of back-rower Rupert Cooper from Plymouth Albion.

    The 29 year-old has joined the Pirates on a one-year deal after spending last season in National One with the Devon side.

    Prior to that, Cooper gained a wealth of championship experience during five seasons with Nottingham.
