    The seat has been Conservative since the 1970s, with Alan Clark representing Plymouth Sutton from 1983 to 1992, when Gary Streeter took over.

    Major boundary changes in 1995 transferred 60% of Sutton's electors to the new seat of South West Devon, with the remainder coming from South Hams.

    Burgh Island

    In 1997, Gary Streeter was elected to the new seat with a 7,397 majority and has held it since, winning in 2005 with a 10,141 majority and then increasing that to 15,874 in 2010.

    This went up again to 20,109 in 2015. Streeter is contesting the seat again this time.

    The candidates are Philippa Davey (Labour), Ian Ross (UKIP), Win Scutt (Green Party), Gary Streeter (Conservative), Caroline Voaden (Liberal Democrat).

    The Conservatives have held this seat since 1945. In the 1997 general election, the long-serving Sir Peter Emery polled 44% while Rachel Trethewey for the Liberal Democrats gained nearly 30%.

    Hugo Swire became MP in 2001 when Sir Peter stepped down after 34 years. The turnout for the 2001 election was 69%, much higher than the national average.

    In 2015 his majority increased again to 12,261. Notably, though, second place fell to Independent Claire Wright, a local councillor and campaigner, who notched up an impressive 13,140 votes to Sir Hugo's 25,401.

    The candidates are Alison Eden (Liberal Democrat), Peter Faithfull (Independent), Brigitte Graham (UKIP), Jan Ross (Labour), Hugo Swire (Conservative), Michael Val Davies (Independent), Claire Wright (Independent).

    A man from Cornwall who stood against the Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn has lost his deposit.

    Michael Foster stood unsuccessfully as the Labour candidate in Camborne and Redruth in 2015 but decided to stand in Islington North to show his opposition to Mr Corbyn's leadership of the party.

    Mr Corbyn took the seat with 40,086 votes, Mr Foster got 208 votes.

    Dr Sarah Wollaston won 26,972 votes to remain in the seat she's held since 2010.

    Labour's Gerrie Lee Messer got 13,495 votes, Liberal Democrat Julian Brazil got 6,466 votes, Jacqui Hodgson from the Green Party got 2,097 votes, and Steven James Harvey for UKIP got 1,240 votes.

    Labour's Ben Bradshaw had held on to the Exeter seat with 34,336 votes.

    Conservative James Taghdissian got 18,219 votes, Liberal Democrat Vanessa Newcombe got 1,562, the Green Party's Joe Levy got 1,027, Independent Jonathan West got 212 and Independent Jonathan Bishop got 67 votes.

    Ben Bradshaw said: "I never in my wildest dreams though I'd be here this year with a majority of this size."

    The turnout was 72%.

    A Conservative seat since the 1930s, though with an earlier Liberal tradition, St Ives fell to the Liberal Democrats in 1997.

    In 1997 the Liberal Democrat Andrew George took the seat on his second attempt with a swing of more than 8% and a majority of 7,170.

    In 2001 Mr George polled more than 50% of the vote, and he repeated this in 2005, with a majority of more than 11,600.

    St Ives

    In 2010 his massive majority was slashed back to just 1,719, with the Tory candidate breathing down his neck. In 2015, at the second attempt, Tory Derek Thomas ousted George with a majority of 2,469.

    George is attempting to regain it this time: mathematically and practically St Ives must be seen as the Liberal Democrats’ brightest hope in the South West.

    He said: "The big story of the night so far is the collapse of the UKIP vote.

    "So far we've seen those voters going different ways in different parts of the country, but will it collapse in Plymouth?

    "The city has the two most marginal seats in the region. The rumours at the counts are UKIP votes at Plymouth, Sutton and Devonport may go to Labour whereas in Plymouth, Moor View they could go to the Tories.

    "It looks like the results won't come in until 4am."
