  2. Fatal fire: 'Service won't face manslaughter charges'published at 13:56 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2017

    BBC Spotlight

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service will not face corporate manslaughter charges after taking more than 90 minutes to reach a fire in which an elderly woman died, an inquest has heard.

Molly Wigmore, who was 76, was found in the bedroom of her Plymouth home on 19 October 2016.

An inquest in the city heard that a neighbour called 999 at 05:13 reporting a smell of smoke and an alarm going off.

Det Con Glenn Harrop, from Devon and Cornwall Police, told the inquest another neighbour called emergency services at 06:43 and it was at 06:46 that a fire engine was dispatched.

He also told the inquest that Ms Wigmore was in poor health and for these reasons it "couldn't be proved beyond all reasonable doubt" whether the delay in sending the fire engine resulted in Ms Wigmore's death.

    The inquest continues.

  3. Extra armed officers in region 'purely for reassurance'published at 13:41 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2017

    BBC Radio Devon

A greater armed police presence in Devon and Cornwall is "purely for reassurance", the region's police force has said.

Officers with visible weapons and sniffer dogs will be patrolling key locations and events throughout the region over the festive period.

Ch Supt Jim Nye said: "There is no increase in threat so I'd like to reassure the public that nothing has changed but it's only right at certain locations at this time of year which get quite busy and quite crowded.

"I think it's the reality of the times. There is a terrorist threat right across the country so it's only sensible that we take precautions. But I'd like the public to come up and speak to the officers and they'll explain what they're doing. This is purely for reassurance and I hope the public see it as that."
