  2. New technology for bed sores and ulcers a 'godsend'published at 11:16 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2017

    Christine Butler
    BBC Radio Cornwall

New technology from a company in Canada is helping prevent bed sores and pressure ulcers for people in Cornwall.

A special mattress or seat pad detects when the patient has been sitting or lying for too long by showing red on the monitor.

This system of pressure mapping the body allows the patient to change position or move to prevent an ulcer forming.

The new technology has received a £500,000 grant from the charity, Health Foundation, to expand after being trialled in the South West .

The sensor, designed by a team from Plymouth and Southampton universities, costs the NHS £15,000. But, treating just one person's bed sores is about £14,000.

Lynn Franks' husband Steve is a tetraplegic and he benefits from the use of the equipment at his home in Par.

She said: "For anybody out there in Steve's situation, this pressure mapping is a godsend."

  3. Bank of England 'could open new office in Plymouth'published at 11:00 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2017

    Hayley Westcott
    BBC News Online

Large parts of the Bank of England may be relocated to Birmingham and other UK cities such as Plymouth if Labour wins power, the Press Association has reported.

A document setting out considerations for the party's next general election manifesto recommend such a move as well as locating a new National Investment Bank in Britain's second biggest city.

Bank of England offices could also be set up in Glasgow, Cardiff and Belfast, with two smaller regional ones in Newcastle and Plymouth as part of a shake-up of the country's financial infrastructure aimed at ensuring more business investment is provided.

Graham Turner of GFC Economics, who provided the report, said more needs to be done to deal with geographic inequality.

"As a central bank sitting at the heart of the UK financial system, the Bank of England needs to be playing an active, leading role, ensuring banks are helping UK companies to innovate. There is a risk that the disproportionate number of technology companies in London and the South East will increase, exacerbating regional inequality," he said.

  5. Fisheries ministers to set 2018's sea bass quotapublished at 10:35 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2017

    BBC Radio Cornwall

Fisheries ministers from across the EU are meeting today to set next year's sea bass quota.

Fishermen from the South West say the current quota is forcing them to throw back hundreds of dead sea bass which could be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds to the regional economy.

Sea bass catches are currently restricted to conserve their numbers, external.

The government says stocks of the fish are in long-term decline but local fishermen say there have been so many bass recently that catching them has been unavoidable.

A Defra spokesman said it is committed to striking a balance that allows sustainable fishing as well as a thriving industry and is currently looking at scientific advice regarding sea bass levels for next year.

Paul Trebilcock, chief executive of the Cornish Fish Producers Organisation who will be at the meeting, says the situation could get even worse.

"Guys in the South West are discarding high value, high quality bass for no reason - because discarding dead fish is not conservation."
