    Torquay's seafront road may be closed again after it was shut last night.

    Torbay Council said it was in response to a flood warning triggered by concerns over easterly winds and a high tide at 17:28 on Wednesday.

    The council added that "this may be repeated" over Thursday and Friday "with the current weather conditions".

    Drivers are being urged to not head out on the roads unless the journey is "essential".

    Highways England has issued a severe weather alert covering large parts of the country.

    Strong easterly winds are expected to take a band of snow into parts of the South West this morning.

    The Met Office has issued yellow and amber weather warnings for the region.

    Adverse weather conditions mean about 200 schools in Devon will be closed today.

  7. Four fire engines at St Austell house blazepublished at 06:40 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2018

    Four fire engines were called out to a house on fire in St Austell.

    The fire service said an outbuilding and four cars were also involved in the blaze at the property in Carwollen Road, which firefighers were called out to at about 03:00.

    As yet there's no information about injuries or damage.

  8. Topsham Road remains closed due to gas leakpublished at 06:26 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2018

    Topsham Road in Exeter is closed again today as work continues to fix a gas leak, Wales & West Utilities has said.

    The road was originally shut on Monday after a burst water main, but engineers accidentally caused a gas leak whilst fixing it.

    It is not yet clear when the road will reopen but "engineers are working round the clock", to repair the leak as quickly as possible.

  10. Snow causing more problems in Devon and Cornwallpublished at 06:21 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2018

    Snow has been causing chaos across Devon since Storm Emma brought it towards England yesterday.

    In Cornwall, further heavy snow and blizzard-like conditions are forecast.

    About 400 schools and colleges across the counties are closed again - some 200 in Cornwall, and a similar number across Devon.

    The Met Office has issued an amber warning for snow and ice, external for the counties today and tomorrow, and are warning there is going to be heavy snow and icy conditions which could cause huge problems.

    Drivers are being cautioned not to take to the roads unless their journey is essential.

    GWR said that Cornwall branch line services were being suspended "due to the anticipated heavy snowfall".

    Several Great Western Railway services have been suspended due to the weather conditions.

    Routes affected include:

    • Between Gunnislake and Plymouth
    • Between Liskeard and Looe
    • Between Par and Newquay
    • Between St Erth and St Ives

    Road transport will not be provided and passengers are advised not to travel.

    There's an amber weather warning in place for snow and ice across the South West for today and for tomorrow morning, the Met Office says., external

    It has also issued a yellow warning for wind and snow - for the whole of Thursday.

    It added that the snow is likely to be accompanied by strong easterly winds.
