    Police in south Devon had a "manic" last 24 hours, they said, along with other emergency services across the South West.

    Kingsbridge Police said, external people should "not drive unless it's absolutely essential".

    Officers said that "too many vehicles are having to be abandoned at the side of the road" and they also dealt mainly with road crashes.

    They added: "However, we also spent a great deal of time dealing with incidents which could have been prevented, or weren't a police matter at all. Please think carefully before calling 999."

    They did not specify what those incidents were.

    The team also said that people should keep and eye on vulnerable or elderly relatives and neighbours.

    "The cold can have much more of a detrimental effect on the infirm," officers said.

    The usually busy road in Exeter is still closed as work continues to fix a gas leak.

    It was originally shut on Monday after a burst water main.

    Wales & West Utilities said it was not clear when the popular commuter route would reopen but engineers were "working round the clock".

    It is the highest level of weather warning possible meaning there is a potential risk to life.

    A spell of heavy snow and blizzard conditions is expected until Friday morning and will be accompanied by very strong easterly winds leading to severe drifting.

    Four fire crews were sent to a gorse blaze at Laneast, near Launceston, after the alarm was raised just before 23:15 on Wednesday.

    The fire service said it received "multiple calls for this incident".

    Firefighters used beaters to keep the blaze under control.

    A derelict building in Penzance has been damaged in a suspected arson attack, firefighters say, external.

    Crews were called to the site in St Clare Street at about 20:10.

    Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said that such incidents "puts both the public and firefighters at unnecessary risk".

    It said: "A lot of Cornwall is covered by on-call firefighters, so there's also a significant cost to each incident."
