    A man armed with a screwdriver has stolen cash from a shop in Plymouth.

    It happened at about 17:00 on Wednesday, when the man, believed to be in his 30s, entered the Co-operative shop on Pool Park Road.

    Police said the shop worker was unharmed and the suspect fled the scene.

    The man was described as white, of slim build, wearing a blue padded jacket with a fur hood, baseball cap and white trainers.

    Bus operator First Kernow says people in Cornwall should "not travel if not necessary".

    The company said it could "not guarantee any journeys today as conditions have the potential to worsen, and can do so at short notice".

    "We are not able therefore, to offer any guarantee that customers making outward journeys will be able to return."

    • In Lelant, the S-bends near the lay-by on Tyringham Road are very icy
    • Heading towards St Erth, Abbey Hill is very icy
    • On the Lizard, the main roads are reported to be clear, but minor roads are very icy

    Waste collections in Truro and surrounding areas, and Hayle and its surrounding areas, have been suspended because of the severe weather conditions, Cornwall Council says.

    The authority said that those affected would need to store "residual and clinical waste until next week".

    It added: "We are planning to carry out the dry recycling and garden waste collections scheduled from today on Saturday this week, weather permitting."

    Parts of Devon have been put on a red weather alert due to the snow and very strong winds.

    The Met Office said: “Red means you should take action now to keep yourself and others safe from the impact of the weather."

    Some public transport services are likely to be cancelled and drivers are being warned that some roads could become blocked by deep snow.

    There could also be power cuts and damage to trees.

  14. Penzance-Plymouth and Truro-Falmouth Docks trains still onpublished at 09:27 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2018

    GWR trains are still operating between Penzance and Plymouth, and on the Truro-Falmouth Docks branch line.

    However, several Great Western Railway services have been suspended due to the weather conditions, including:

    • Between Gunnislake and Plymouth
    • Between Liskeard and Looe
    • Between Par and Newquay
    • Between St Erth and St Ives

    Passengers on affected routes are advised not to travel.

    Meanwhile, there are no flights to the Isles of Scilly because St Mary's Airport is closed.

    Nearly 260 schools and colleges in Cornwall are closed today, with heavy snow expected to return again.

    The Met Office has an amber weather warning in place for wind and snow, external in the county, with parts of neighbouring Devon and other areas in the South West being upgraded to a red warning.

    Cornwall Council is urging people not to travel unless their journey is absolutely essential.

    Many parts of Cornwall experienced gridlock yesterday as vehicles struggled in the snow and ice.

    Out on the Lizard Peninsula yesterday conditions were so severe it became known as the "blizzard on the Lizard".

    One driver, James Kitto, was trying to get home to Porthleven on Wednesday but diverted to his parents' home near Helston instead.

    He said on Facebook, external that a journey which should have taken about 45 minutes lasted for eight hours, and saw "drifting snow, abandoned cars and icy surfaces".

    He said: "[I] had to be towed by a tractor at one point and the car had to be pushed by two men at another point."

    On the A399 towards Brayford and South Molton, the road is becoming "impassable" to all vehicles other than 4X4s.

    Devon and Cornwall Police are warning people to not travel unnecessarily.

    Drivers are being urged to "please, please slow down" as Devon and Cornwall Police says it's already received reports of "cars leaving the roads".

    It added drivers should not put themselves or other drivers at risk and to stay at home if possible.
