    One of two boxes of ammunition recovered from a beach in Cornwall contained 10 rounds of "what look like anti-aircraft type shells", police say.

    The boxes were found in two separate discoveries on Porthbeor beach on the Roseland Peninsula and on Vault Beach in Gorran Haven over the weekend, Insp Rick Milburn, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said.

    One box was labelled that it contained "20mm linked" shells.

    The second box also contained the same type of shells as found in the first, he added.

    Insp Milburn said the boxes contained "highly dangerous" ammunition and should not be tampered with by anyone who discovered anything similar.

    He added that the Royal Navy had been contacted to try and identify the rounds, and try and ascertain where they came from.

    Fire crews are checking for hotspots at the scene of a flat fire in North Devon.

    Crews were called to Highfield Road in Ilfracombe at about 09:55 after reports of smoke coming from a top floor flat.

    Firefighters have since extinguished the blaze and no-one has been injured.

    A thermal image camera is being used to check for hotspots.

    Firefighters are currently tackling a blaze on the top floor of a four storey building in Ilfracombe, a fire service has said.

    Crews were called to Highfield Road at about 09:55.

    On arrival, it was confirmed smoke was “issuing from a top floor flat”.

    Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service remain at the scene. No-one has been injured.

    Police are concerned for a 16-year-old girl missing from Newton Abbot.

    Ellie Turpin was last seen on Tuesday in the Heathfield area at about 17:00 and is described as about 5ft 5ins (1.65m) tall, with slim build and long dark hair.

    She was wearing baggy trousers and a baggy jumper, and was carrying what is a bag.

    A new wheelhouse has been craned into place, external on the SS Freshspring in Bideford.

    The wheelhouse, made by Cornish-based Butler and Co, has transformed the look of the former Royal Fleet Auxiliary water supply steamship, which is being restored.

    Up to a third of young people face living in private rented accommodation all their lives, a new report by the Resolution Foundation has found.

    The think tank said 40% of "millennials" - those born between 1980 and 1996 - were living in rented housing by the age of 30.

    That was twice as many as "generation X" - those born between 1965 and 1980.

    The foundation's Home Improvements report said "generation rent" needed much more help. It called for more affordable homes for first-time buyers to be built, as well as better protection for those who rent.

    The government said it was already putting policies in place to improve the housing market.

    A Syrian refugee settled in Cornwall says he wants more pressure on President Bashar al-Assad and his allies to stop the civil war in his home country.

    Zahar Berber lives in Truro with his wife and two young children. His family are among 10 Syrian refugee families settled in the county by the government over the last two years.

    He left Damascus six years ago, where he ran a restaurant. It has since been destroyed.

    At the weekend, the US, UK, and France launched a coordinated missile strike on multiple targets in the country.

    The operation was in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma that the three nations say was carried out by the government of President Assad, in which dozens of civilians were killed.

    Chemical weapons inspectors will be permitted to visit the site on Wednesday, Russia has said. They have not had access before.

    Boxes of ammunition have been found on beaches in Cornwall.

    Insp Rick Milburn, from Devon and Cornwall Police, said: “Over the weekend, we received two reports that ammunition was located on Porthbeor beach on the Roseland Peninsula and on Vault Beach in Gorran Haven.

    “We informed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit who handled the ammunition, which is believed to be highly dangerous.

    “If located, we would ask the public not to approach these boxes but to contact police right away."

    Police added it was believed the boxes washed up on the beaches and contained navy ammunition.

    Two acres of gorse have been destroyed in a fire near Cardinham in Cornwall.

    Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said two fire crews from Bodmin extinguished the blaze near the A30 after they were called to the scene at about 19:40 on Monday.
