    Shipping containers

    Plans to use shipping containers as storage units on a site at St Columb Major have been approved by Cornwall Council.

    Neil Penny-Harding had applied for permission for change of use for a paddock in Station Road to be changed into a container storage facility.

    Under the proposals, there would be 87 containers which would be rented out to people looking to store their belongings.

    St Columb Town Council had objected to the plans as the site is at the entrance to the town and is a greenfield site.

    Police are concerned for a 44-year-old man missing from Plymouth.

    Michael Bignell was last seen on Sunday in the city at about 23:30 and is described as white, 5ft 9 inches (1.8m) tall, with thinning/balding hair.

    No CrossCountry trains are running between Plymouth and Exeter St Davids until at least 11:00, National Rail Enquiries says.

    It said it was because of forecasted severe weather in the Dawlish area.

    The move affects all stops on CrossCountry service between London Paddington and Penzance.

    Passengers could use Great Western Railway services "on reasonable routes", it added.

    A flood alert was issued for the area by the Environment Agency on Monday.

    It is indeed proper "blowy" out there this morning.

    Gusts to 60mph have been recorded at St Mary's in Scilly, and southerly winds generally reaching near gale or gale force in gusts have been experienced around parts of Devon and Cornwall.

    A Quidditch player from Falmouth has been chosen to represent the UK at the Quidditch World Cup.

    The sport, adapted from the Harry Potter novels, combines elements of rugby and dodgeball.

    How do you play Quidditch?

    • A match has two teams of seven players aiming to score as many points as they can.
    • Each player must play with a broom between their legs
    • A team consists of one keeper, three chasers, two beaters, and a seeker.

    A street in St Ives was closed yesterday afternoon whilst firefighters rescued a seagull from the roof of the NatWest Bank.

    The RSPCA called them out to the two-storey building on Tregenna Hill after being alerted to the bird which appeared to be in distress.

    Crews used a ladder to bring the seagull down in a cardboard box.

    Boardmasters surf and music festival says it is introducing a re-usable cup scheme to cut the amount of single-use plastic generated.

    Organisers of the five-day event, which takes place at Watergate Bay in August, have unveiled a new sustainability strategy.

    Goals include:

    • Continuing to reduce the amount of single-use plastic items used on site to levels close to zero
    • A reduction in overall waste generated by the event
    • Increasing site-wide recycling
    • Reducing its carbon footprint
    • Plans to continue working harmoniously with the local community and environment.

    At the weekend Boardmasters hosted two beach cleans at Fistral and Watergate Bay with charity partner Surfers Against Sewage as part of the Big Spring Beach Clean, external campaign.

    A man was airlifted from a Cornish beach after he was cut off by the tide.

    The man had a bike with him and was stranded on Porthtowan Beach.

    A rescue helicopter, lifeboat and search and rescue team helped with the operation on Monday afternoon.

    The man was winched to safety.

    On St Agnes Coastguard Search & Rescue Team's Facebook page, external it said: "This was a perfect example of cliff team, lifeboat and helicopter working together to rescue a very appreciative casualty."

    It is decision day for Cornwall's first ever proposed stadium.

    The county's councillors will vote on whether to give £3m of public money towards the scheme.

    Planning permission for the £14m structure has already been given.

    The Cornish Pirates rugby team and Truro City Football Club would use the stadium as well as Truro and Penwith College.

    The largest mechanical puppet ever constructed in Britain is on tour around England and Wales.

    The Man Engine, a 36ft (11m) tall miner, is on its Resurrection Tour after its first appearances in Cornwall and Devon in 2016 to celebrate the areas' mining heritage.

    It visited The Ironbridge Gorge Museums, external on Saturday.

    Out-of-date distress flares should not be brought to sea safety events for disposal, a Cornwall coastguard rescue team says.

    Falmouth Coastguard Rescue Team said, external "several members of the public" brought in such flares to a recent event, including some dated from the 1970s.

    The team added that members were also concerned that such ordnance, which they did make safe, had been "kept in unknown conditions".

    The team said some chandlers offered a disposal service in exchange for new flares for leisure boat owners; Devon and Cornwall Police could take them, as could the Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre.

    It added that commercial flares would not be accepted and such users should contact flare or safety equipment suppliers for disposal.

    Anyone who spotted a flare washed up on the coastline should call 999 and ask for coastguards to dispose of it.

    "It's important you don't attempt to touch or move an out-of-date flare, as they can be unstable when their environment changes suddenly," the team said.

    The Royal Navy says it places "great importance on maintaining the highest possible standards of behaviour from its personnel at all times" after a Royal Marine was jailed for stealing military kit and selling it online.

    Afghanistan and Iraq veteran Warrant Officer Michael Bath took clothing, boots and badges from the Commando Training Centre at Lympstone, Devon, Exeter Crown Court heard.

    Bath, 49, of Horton Path, Blyth in Northumberland, was jailed for 15 months after admitting stealing and possessing criminal property after he sold £66,000 of clothing and badges between 2012 and 2016.

    The items, sold on eBay to fund his gambling and drinking, included "poignant" green beret badges.

    The navy did not confirm if he had been discharged from the service or would be, but said that "where a custodial sentence is awarded, discharge from the service would be considered".
