The US, UK and France say their air forces and navies have conducted strikes on several sites in Syria over the weekend.

The strikes took place at about 04:00 local time (01:00 GMT) on Saturday, a week after a suspected chemical attack on the then-rebel-held town of Douma, which opposition activists, medics and rescue workers say killed more than 40 people.

Both of the county's Labour MPs said such action should have had House of Commons approval and debate.

    Richard Whitehouse
    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Plans to demolish a seafront hotel in Newquay and replace it with housing have been rejected by Cornwall Council.

Plans for the redevelopment of the Trebarwith Hotel in Newquay had been recommended for approval by planning officers but councillors voted to reject them by 11 to four.

The applicants had applied for permission to demolish the hotel in Trebarwith Crescent and replace it with six townhouses, nine apartments and a detached house.

One of the key issues of concern among councillors had been that the application was contrary to the Newquay Neighbourhood Plan, which is in the process of being drawn up and proposes a restriction on cliffside development to try to limit the amount of buildings on the seafront.

Newquay town councillors also raised concerns about the size of the building and the impact on the views of the seafront and coastal path.

The centre's gym and other facilities are still open. An opening date for the pool is scheduled for September.

    Daniel Clark

Recent works, including replacing a damaged expansion join, have now been completed. However, inspections revealed further emergency work was needed.

It was originally planned that the cover plates at the east end of the bridge would be replaced later this year but they have reached a critical condition which now requires immediate replacement. This work is under way with the 20mph speed restriction remaining in force and temporary two-way traffic lights are in place.”

  13. Devon canal footpath damaged by floodspublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 16 April 2018

    Daniel Clark
    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Recent heavy rain and flood water has forced the closure of a pedestrian walkway at the Stover Canal, in Devon.

The Stover Canal Trust says they have been left with no option but to close the towpath, the area over the Fishwick Feeder, to prevent harm to users.

Heavy rainfall and high levels of flood water from the River Teign, which passes along the Stover Canal, has damaged the walkway.

Trust vice-chairman Paul Taper said: "The walkway has been reinforced over the years after previous flooding instances but it looks like a longer lasting solution is now needed. The Feeder was on our schedule of works for future years. Hopefully, a solution can be found quickly to at least reopen the path for the summer."

A man knocked down by a car in Penryn at the weekend suffered a badly damaged pelvis and some ruptured organs, police say.

Officers said the pedestrian was injured on the A39, near the Asda store on Kernick Road industrial estate, at about 04:20 on Saturday.

Motor Police Constable Jonathan Clifton-Griffiths said the 41-year-old local man suffered potentially life-changing injures and was being treated at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, with the next "24 to 48 hours crucial" in his treatment.

His family, who lived out of the county, had been notified and were at his bedside, he added.

MPC Clifton-Griffiths said they were trying to ascertain why the man was walking along that stretch of road, and added that a female driver from Falmouth who had come forward was "being very helpful" in assisting police with inquiries.
