    Tate St Ives has been shortlisted for the Art Fund Museum Of TheYear.

    The award celebrates "innovation and exceptional achievement" in museums and galleries across the UK.

    The Cornish art gallery, which reopened in October after a £20m refurbishment project, is one of five venues up for the accolade.

    The winning museum will be announced at a ceremony at the Victoria And Albert Museum in London in July.

    The other venues up for Art Fund Museum Of The Year are:

    • Hull's Ferens Art Gallery
    • Glasgow Women's Library
    • The Postal Museum in London
    • Brooklands Museum in Weybridge

  5. Devon man, 92, to be presented with Legion d'Honneurpublished at 09:23 British Summer Time 2 May 2018

    A 92-year-old man is to be presented with the Legion d'Honneur later in a special ceremony in Newton Abbot.

    Tony Portman, who is from Kingsteignton, served on board HMS Nelson during the Normandy landings in World War Two.

    He remains an active member of the Royal Naval Association.

    He'll be presented with the award by Newton Abbot Mayor Ann Jones at the town hall.

    The Legion d'Honneur is one of France's highest accolades, with the French Government awarding it to D-Day veterans as a way of thanking those who fought and risked their lives to secure France's liberation during the war.

    Controversial plans to build flats at Paignton Harbour are being discussed later.

    Torbay Council is looking into working with a private developer to update the harbour and make it "something so much better".

    However, the Harbour Users Association said it was worried it would mean the likely displacement of organisations such as the local sailing club and the Sea Scouts.

    There are also concerns it would "destroy the character of the place".

    Torbay Council said it was keen to stress that all it wanted to do was improve the area and accommodate all groups that used the harbour.

    Drivers are being urged to "take care" while driving around Devon this morning.

    Highways England said , externalthere was "lots of surface water" on many roads, including the A38.

    The Met Office also warned earlier that it was "particularly wet" on the A30 in Devon.

    Devon and Cornwall's police and crime commissioner has spoken of a "drive" to protect neighbourhood policing and have officers actively involved with local communities.

    Alison Hernandez has been giving evidence before a committee of MPs about the pressure on resources and how it has affected such work.

    Crews from Daves Castle and Middlemoor were sent to the property on Headland Close in Exeter at about 05:35.

    The whole of the first floor received extensive smoke damage.

    A Cornish Bard and advocate of Cornish history has begun a campaign to protect the county's old cast iron fingerposts.

    Merv Davey said the old signs could be expensive to be remake like-for-like, but they were an important part of Cornish countryside and this look should be preserved.

    Fire crews from across North Devon have tackled a fire at a commercial garage in Northam.

    Three crews from Bideford, Torrington and Barnstaple were called to the property just after 01:00 this morning.

    When they arrived, the garage was well alight and a number of vehicles were on fire.

    Environmental protection equipment was used to contain run off from oil-based products in the garage.
