It added that rival operator Cross Country "also cancelled a service in between these two as well", adding to difficulties.

    Quote Message

We arranged for ticket acceptance with First Kernow buses enabling customers to travel on local bus services. We also tried to source additional buses but none were available. While we did arrange alternative transport, we know how disruptive this would have been. We would urge those travelling to get in touch as they may be entitled to a refund."

The loss of this young lady will impact on all of us in many ways. She was a lovely, caring, talented and popular student who will be missed by everyone who knew her. Always seen about school with a smile on her face, she had everything to live for. Her friends are grief-stricken that she should be taken at such a young age."

Villagers in Dobwalls say they're fed up with speeding drivers and lorries taking shortcuts through the village and HGV drivers following sat-nav devices through narrow lanes.

Locals campaigned for decades to have a bypass built but said the road through the village was still extremely busy.

The Dobwalls Road Safety Group, which is holding a public meeting on Monday night at The Highwayman pub, said members were still "absolutely fed-up with the speeding drivers [and] commercial vehicles taking a shortcut through our village".

They are now campaigning to "try and get a traffic management scheme put in place, better signage, and, ultimately, speed cameras installed before someone is killed".

Representatives of Cornwall Council, Devon and Cornwall Police and Department for Transport are due to attend.

  10. Boris Johnson's absence from Heathrow debate criticisedpublished at 09:25 British Summer Time 25 June 2018

    BBC Politics

MPs will vote tonight on whether to approve a third runway at Heathrow Airport, but Boris Johnson's absence from the debate has been criticised by a Devon MP.

The government is supporting the expansion, but a number of Conservatives plan to rebel.

Foreign Secretary Mr Johnson - who previously vowed to lie in front of bulldozers to stop Heathrow's expansion - is abroad on ministerial business, so won't be voting.

Totnes Conservative Sarah Wollaston said it was a feeble excuse and it would have been "an opportunity for Boris to put his money where his mouth is."

It is widely expected that the expansion plan will get Commons backing.

  12. Fire service van written-off after pothole caused crashpublished at 08:51 British Summer Time 25 June 2018

    Andrew Segal
    BBC Local Live

A fire service van was written-off when it hit a pothole and crashed into another vehicle, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said.

It was among six of the service's vehicles revealed to have been damaged in pothole-related accidents since 2015, a Freedom of Information request by the Press Association shows.

The fire service said the van was driving round a corner when it "hit a bump in the road awkwardly and the vehicle veered into the other carriageway and collided with a pick up van travelling in the other direction" in 2017.

It did not reveal where the crash occurred and it is not known if anybody was injured in the collision.

Two other vehicles were damaged in 2016:

    • A car suffered scuffs and slight chips to its front spoiler along an unmade road and was not repaired
    • A van damaged its wing mirror when another vehicle swerved to avoid a pothole

There were three other vehicles damaged in 2017 as well as the written-off van:

    • A fire engine damaged its stability jack after its rear wheels went into a pothole at low speed (cost unknown)
    • A fire engine sustained damage when its front wheel hit a pothole on a very narrow street (cost unknown)
    • A fire engine from Glastonbury station dropped into a pothole at a farmyard opening, causing it to snag on the gate and damage a locker hanger
  13. Young people 'should be warned of unknown substance risks'published at 08:40 British Summer Time 25 June 2018

    Andrew Segal
    BBC Local Live

Children and young people should be warned "about the risks of taking unknown substances", police say.

The warning comes after a 15-year-old girl died after taking a substance in Tavistock.

The girl - thought to be a pupil at Tavistock College - became unwell on Saturday afternoon near a disused viaduct.

A 14-year-old boy was also taken to hospital in a critical condition, but he is recovering. It is believed both teenagers suffered adverse reactions to a substance.

Insp Pete Turner, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said officers would "urge all parents and carers to speak to their children and young people about the risks".

Investigations are continuing. Police have appealed for anyone who has information about the incident "including anyone who was in the area around the viaduct/Crowndale Road" on Saturday afternoon to come forward.

  14. Some older drivers 'not fit to be on the road'published at 08:20 British Summer Time 25 June 2018

    BBC Spotlight

About 300 drivers over the age of 80 are involved in road crashes every year in the South West, according to Devon and Cornwall Police.

A local driving expert is calling for all over 70s to be offered an assessment to make sure they are safe to be behind the wheel.

The Department for Transport says it keeps the rules under constant review, but one local driving instructor says older drivers can cause more risks.

    Quote Message

We can all make mistakes but the older driver tends to make those few more, and from the age of, I suppose 70, those mistakes become a little bit more frequent.

    Roger Jewell, Advanced Driving Instructor

Older drivers are required to fill in a self-assessment every three years declaring they are medically fit to continue driving.

Despite the police figures and Mr Jewell's opinion, Devon and Cornwall Police statistics showed in 2017 just 5% of crashes involved drivers aged over 80.

A Swansea University study in 2016 revealed drivers aged 70 are involved in three to four times fewer accidents than men aged between 17-21.
