Staff at coronavirus vaccination hubs are making final preparations.

Refrigerated containers holding the vaccine doses have been arriving in the UK from Belgium and are being prepared to be moved from secure locations to the hospitals.

Vaccinations will be co-ordinated across the South West region at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, as well as at the Royal Cornwall in Truro, Yeovil and Dorset county hospitals.

People aged 80 and over as well as care home workers will start getting the vaccination, along with higher risk NHS workers.

Dr David Strain, a senior clinical lecturer at the University of Exeter Medical School, said it was great news.

We can be fully confident that this vaccine is going to be safe for all of our residents as it starts to roll out. The only question is whether it will be lasting for three months, six months, 12 months or decades. That's the bit we still need to find out - whether this will be an annual booster programme or a 'let's get it all over and we're sorted for the next 10 years.'"

  18. Covid restrictions: Dorset 'could move into tier 1'published at 16:03 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2020

    Drew Mellor

The leader of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) council has said he was “hopeful” Dorset could move into tier 1 soon if infection rates continue to fall.

Councillor Drew Mellor said there were “no guarantees” but the move could happen as soon as the first review on 16 December.

He added that tier 2 was a particularly “difficult place” for the hospitality industry, and that he was “really keen” for an easing of restrictions to support it.

The tier system came into force on Wednesday based on a decision made by the government last week.

At the time the BCP council area had an infection rate of just under 150 per 100,000, although the latest figures show it has fallen to 85.8.

The government has said it will review area tiers every two weeks, basing decisions primarily on five criteria:

    • Infection rates across all age groups
    • Infection rates among over-60s
    • The rate at which cases are increasing or decreasing
    • The rate of positive cases following testing
    • Pressure on the NHS

Mr Mellor said these figures were falling but that the South West had a lower NHS capacity than other regions, meaning it was under more pressure than other areas with similar case rates.
