  1. How to get the best photo of the 'supermoon' - according to Nasapublished at 17:29 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2016

    If there happens to be a break in the cloud where you live tonight, you might want to photograph the "supermoon" which won't be this close to Earth again until November 2034.

    Nasa has issued some top tips on taking a memorable image, which include:

    • Choose the location carefully
    • Use people to bring it to life
    • Use advanced DSLR techniques

    We're also told that if you're prepared to wait until Tuesday, weather conditions should be better, although the moon won't be at its biggest size.

    A day after Remembrance Sunday, a former soldier from Essex has been dreaming of a future where he can walk again. 

    Chris Baker from Coggeshall was paralysed from the waist down when he was hit by a road side bomb in Iraq. 

    Today he's been put through his paces using new robotic legs.

    A 26-year-old driver from London is in a critical but stable condition in hospital after a fatal crash on the A12, which killed his two passengers.

    A Colchester-bound BMW left the road at Ingatestone and hit a tree on Saturday night.

    The dead pair been named as Farhad-Zubair Maqbool and Yahya Sharif, who were both aged 25 and from Acton. 

    Detectives say they want to speak to witnesses, especially the driver of the car in front.

    Earlier today Essex Fire and Rescue told us the 72-year-old man died in a blaze in Clacton as he "did not hear his smoke alarm as he was hard of hearing". 

    After further investigations, the service now says it believes the man had been alerted to the alarm and attempted to exit his property.

    "However due to his exits not being clear, he was not able to leave his property and was overcome by the smoke," a spokesman said. 

  5. Police gun amnesty harvests 130 guns in 12 dayspublished at 15:44 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2016

    Members of the public have handed in 129 guns during Essex Police's 12-day gun amnesty, the force has said.

    During the campaign, which finished on Friday, 41 shot guns, 32 pistols, 43 air weapons, seven revolvers and six rifles were handed in. 

    Ten of the weapons handed in are "likely" to be submitted to the National Ballistics Intelligence Service to determine their history.

    Essex Police described the result of the amnesty as "fantastic".

  7. Firefighters tried to save man's life following Clacton firepublished at 15:15 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2016

    Speaking following last night's fatal fire in Clacton-on-Sea, Neil Fenwick from Essex Fire and Rescue has described the attempts his team made to save the life of a 72-year-old man.

    "When we arrived firefighters found a well developed fire on the ground floor," he said.

    "Crews managed to find somebody inside, brought them outside, but despite working with our colleagues from police and ambulance, unfortunately the man was pronounced dead at the scene."

    Southend United striker Nile Ranger said his first goal at Bury on Saturday was inspired by the "finesse" shot on the Fifa video game.

    The 25-year-old ended a 735-day goal drought with a low, curled right-footed strike against the Shakers... and then scored a second during the 4-1 victory.

    "I play too much Fifa, I tried to put the finesse on it and it worked, so I'll try it again next game," Ranger told BBC Essex.

    It's that time of the year again when the country comes together to raise money for Children in Need.

    Teen Talk is a charity in Harwich which benefits from some of the cash raised. 

    It’s a free drop-in service where youngsters can talk about issues like stress, depression and suicide.

  11. Tribute paid to lorry driver who died in East Bergholtpublished at 13:45 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2016

    A man who died after his lorry left the B1070 in East Bergholt on Friday has been named as Michael Renton, 60, from Clacton-on-Sea. 

    He's believed to have suffered a "medical episode", Suffolk Police said.

    Michael's partner Annette has paid tribute to him, saying: "Our Mickey was the most precious gift ever given to all his family and friends. 

    "Whether it be fishing, watching the Grand Prix or Dad’s Army, he would be in his element. 

    "He had touched the hearts of everyone around him and he will be forever missed by all."

    The neighbour of a man who died in last night's fire has described him as a "good old Clacton mate".

    A 72-year-old man, named locally as Dave Foster, was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Kenneth Aldis said he was woken up just after 22:00 to the smell of acrid smoke. 

    "I thought 'what's going on here? Is my bed on fire?'," Mr Aldis said. 

    "I went outside and could see the smoke was billowing out his front door.

    "He was born in that house. It's very sad, he was a good old Clacton mate."

    Essex Police say they are not treating last night's fire at a house in Clacton-on-Sea as suspicious. 

    A man, aged in his 70s, was declared dead at the scene following the blaze in Warwick Road.

    I've arrived at the scene of the fatal house fire in Clacton.

    Glass in the front door of the house is broken, windows upstairs and down are open as fire investigation officers move around inside.

    Firefighters were called here to Warwick Road at about 23:10 yesterday evening. The fire was out within in hour.

    A man, in his 70s, was found unconscious in the lounge and pronounced dead at the scene.

    A man who stole six Poppy Appeal collection boxes around the Southend area has been jailed for one year.

    Scott Williams, of Southview Drive, Westcliff was sentenced at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on Saturday. 

    The 35-year-old pleaded guilty to six counts of theft of Poppy Appeal collection boxes and failing to provide a sample for a drugs test.

    The thefts took place at the restaurant Mangetout, the Roslin Hotel, a BP Garage on London Road in Westcliff, a church in Leigh and a charity shop on Sutton Road in Southend.

    He was also ordered to pay £300 to the Royal British Legion.

    A joint police and fire service is currently under way to establish what caused last night's fatal fire.
