  2. Charity forced to cancel fundraising event to make way for Murspublished at 15:22 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2016

    Organisers of an Essex fundraising group say they're "angry" after their event at Colchester United's football ground was cancelled to make way for Olly Murs' concert.

    Help Alexia Walk, external, which is raising cash to fund an operation for a child with cerebral palsy, was due to host a fundraising evening at the ground on 10 June, but the date now clashes with the Witham pop star's tour.

    Posting on their Facebook page, external, the fundraiser said: "I paid a lot of money to secure that date, have sold tickets and all the acts we have booked." 

    A spokesman from Colchester United told BBC Essex: "We have offered our help to the family to identify an alternative date at the stadium and will be doing all we can to help ensure it can still be a successful evening for all concerned."

    Tendring Council has sent us photos of damage caused to beach huts in Frinton over the weekend. 

    In total, 27 were vandalised with the council estimating a clean-up and repair cost of thousands of pounds.

    Douglas Carswell, UKIP's only MP, has told BBC Essex that the party has been offered the opportunity to "turn a new page" after Paul Nuttall was elected as UKIP's new leader.

    "There's just a few puddles, a few inches deep - it should be a metre and a half of water [nearly five feet], and there's nothing."

    That's the observation of the chairman of Sudbury Rowing Club, external, on the day the Environment Agency is due to send divers into the River Stour to free a sluice gate that's become jammed.

    Mike Arnott continued: "We’re stuck - there's about a hundred yards between us and the main river and we obviously can't get out there. 

    "The silt at the bottom of the cut here is two to three feet deep. 

    "When the chaps from the Environment Agency, external were wading around trying to get the fish out, they were in over their knees - they were wearing dry suits but they were in over their knees in silt and mud so there's no way we can get our boats out.

    "Hopefully the Environment Agency will fix the problem, and the river can start to fill up again."

    Witham popstar Olly Murs, external has announced he's coming back to Essex as part of his UK-wide tour next year.

    The 32-year-old, who rose to fame in The X Factor in 2009, will perform at Colchester United's stadium on 10 June 2017.

    Tickets go on sale on Friday at 09:00.

    His tour also takes in the O2 Arena in London and Thetford Forest in Suffolk.

    This is the hair appliance Essex Trading Standards is warning people not to use as it runs the "risk of electrocution".

    Richard Knight from the organisation said detecting these product is a problem.

    "We can't go to the airport and stop a whole load as they're coming in dribs and drabs, so this is all about consumers needing to be aware," he said.

    Thieves left a trail of destruction after 27 beach huts were broken into over the weekend in Frinton-on-Sea, Tendring District Council says.

    Vandals are said to have targeted the huts in the early hours of Saturday morning and caused damage worth thousands of pounds in the High Wall area.

    Councillor Nick Turner said: ""These beach huts are people's pride and joy and they will have put a great deal of time and money into keeping them up to the best possible standard. 

    "It is hugely upsetting for them that they have been broken into, damaged and personal belongings have been strewn along the promenade and beach."

    A woman claims a £5 Chinese electronic hair appliance she bought online could have cost her her life.

    Trading Standards Officers have since issued a warning about the product after tests showed it presents a risk of electrocution or fire. The plastic cap heats up and claims to add volume to your hair.

    A woman is being cared for by specialist police officers after a sexual assault down a "busy" Colchester road in the early hours of yesterday morning.

    It's understood the woman was attacked by a man in Lexden Road near the Essex County Hospital at about 03:15 on Sunday.

    The police said they are particularly keen to speak to a man who was in the area with a blue carrier bag.

  19. Basildon man due in court over Bow police officer attackpublished at 08:19 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2016

    A Basildon man is due to appear in court today charged with the attempted murder of a police officer in east London.

    The plain clothes officer, in his 40s, was attacked in an alleyway near a pub in Bow on Tuesday. He remains in hospital. 

    Andrew Beadie, of Basildon, and Janine Morris, of Bow, are due to appear at Barkingside Magistrates' Court both charged with attempted murder.
