    Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service's chief officer Dave Curry has called for sprinkler systems to be fitted in tower blocks in the aftermath of the Grenfell fire.

    Southampton City Council has announced it will retrofit them in its tower blocks in the wake of the disaster.

    Oxford has become the latest area to set up its own lottery to fund voluntary and charity groups.

    The move was agreed by Oxford City Council, which expects it to be an online lottery.

    Lotteries have already been set up by councils in Portsmouth, Aylesbury, and Melton.

    A report said lotteries are considered to be a "very low risk gambling activity", and expected Oxford's to raise £60,000 a year for good causes.

  5. Southampton tower blocks to be fitted with sprinklerspublished at 10:37 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

    A number of high-rise council tower blocks in Southampton are to be "retro-fitted" with fire sprinklers.

    Southampton City Council has announced sprinkler fitting will be rolled-out at the city's towers from next week.

    Dave Curry, Chief Officer of Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said sprinklers were like "having a firefighter in every room in your home".

    The works will start at Albion Towers, Sturminster House and Shirley Towers, where two firefighters died in 2010.

  11. Oxford to award honorary degreespublished at 09:47 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

    There's a chance to see the University of Oxford in all its pomp and ceremony today.

    This morning heads of colleges and university dignitaries will move in procession with those recieving honourary degrees through Radcliffe Square in Oxford and into the Sheldonian Theatre.

    The honourary degree giving ceremony is known as Encaenia, external - the Greek word for festival of renewal.

    The service will be closed to the public but viewing points in Radcliffe Square will be set up allowing people to watch the parade by in full academic dress, external.

    Oxford United manager Michael Appleton has joined Leicester City as Craig Shakespeare's assistant.

    Appleton, guided Oxford to automatic promotion from League Two and two Wembley finals in the Football League Trophy in his three years at the club.

    The 41-year-old previously worked with Shakespeare at West Brom.

    "Michael has already achieved great success and been acknowledged by many as one of the most talented coaches in English football," Shakespeare said.

    Staff at Oasis Academy in Lordshill say Year 11 should come in for their exams, but all others should stay at home - the damage hasn't yet been assessed.
