  1. Twinning association awarded £10k of lottery fundingpublished at 14:34 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2016

    Worcester Twinning Association has been awarded a grant of £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

    The money will be used to carry out Worcester City Council’s decision to have a temporary twinning with the village of Gouzeaucourt in France.

    At the end of the World War One, Worcester "adopted" Gouzeaucourt (pictured) to help it recover in the aftermath of the four-year conflict.

    The Twinning Association plans to stage an exhibition about the relationship between Worcester and its adopted village.

    There will also be a website telling the story of how Gouzeaucourt was on the front line or occupied for much of the war and detailing the help Worcester gave in the town’s post-war reconstruction.

    Both the flood alerts issued for the River Teme in Worcestershire have been lifted, the Environment Agency says.

    There is still a warning in place for River Severn at Court Meadow, Kempsey and Callow End, external.

    A 54-year-old E-Type Jaguar Roadster which once belonged to a princess, who used it to drive her pet panthers around a luxury island, is up for auction today.

  5. Council 'inundated' with offers to help refugeespublished at 12:51 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2016

    Herefordshire Council says it's been "inundated" with people coming forward to help the Syrian refugees who'll be arriving in the county in the next couple of weeks. 

    About 70 people have volunteered their services to help with everything from driving them around the area to helping them with their shopping. 

    Sixty people will be resettled in Herefordshire, while in Worcestershire there are already 38 refugees being cared for, with a further 12 arriving by the end of the month.

    A Kidderminster Harriers Ladies player is appealing for people to donate old football kit for her to take to Thailand next month. 

    Lauren Wyatt is visiting her dad, who lives in the north of the country, for Christmas and wants to distribute as much kit to children who live in the village as possible.

    The power has been off in 600 homes in the WR2 postcode area of Worcester since 10:00.

    Western Power Distribution say they have engineers working to reroute their systems, and power will be restored "in phases" over "the next couple of hours".

    Using a mobile phone at the wheel is as dangerous as drink driving, the chief constable of West Mercia Police says.

    A month-long enforcement campaign is under way and in the first three days 118 drivers were ticketed, eight in front of a police station.

    Opposition parties have voted through changes in the way the leadership of Worcester City Council works, despite the plans being opposed by the ruling Labour group.
