    East Riding of Yorkshire Council has this afternoon voted to raise council tax by 4.99%, with 3% of that being used to cover adult social care.

    But council leader Stephen Parnaby (pictured) says the rise still won't cover the cost of adult social care.

    Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is recruiting for 20 full-time firefighters. 

    Around 2,500 people applied last summer and the whole process begins again now to find another 20 recruits for the next course starting in September 2017.

    A series of taster days will take place in February and March and the fire service wants to encourage people from under-represented groups, including women and those from black and minority ethnic backgrounds.

    A 28-year-old man was left with serious facial injuries after an argument turned violent on Newland Avenue in Hull.

    Two Hull projects are being funded as part of a £7m Yorkshire-wide research programme, external aimed at improving lung cancer outcomes and increasing early diagnosis in the region.

    Yorkshire Cancer Research will invest £712,501 in a new community health campaign led by Professor Una Macleod (pictured), Dean of the Hull York Medical School, which will focus on raising awareness of lung cancer symptoms in the area and people to attend lung health checks. 

    A second project in Hull, funded by a £347,666 investment, will focus on improving participation in bowel cancer screening as mortality rates in Hull are the highest in the region according to CancerData NHS, external.

    East Riding of Yorkshire Council will decide today whether or not to increase its council tax by 4.99% - the maximum possible without putting it to a vote.

    Now 3% of this rise would go towards adult social care funding and the rest would be used for day-to-day services. 

    Recently the government gave local authorities permission to increase council tax further to help pay for rising social care demands.

    Eleven new environmentally friendly vehicles will be used by North East Lincolnshire Council from today.

    They use electricity instead of petrol or diesel, the authority say it will save them over £1000 per vehicle over 10,000 miles. 

    The vehicles will be used as part of a group which covers security and neighbourhood operations.

    Two teenagers who died in a car accident have been named by police.

    Levi Dickinson, 16, and Rhogan Jones, 17, of Goole, were both passengers in a green Volkswagen Polo that left the road and collided with a tree near Howden yesterday. Both died at the scene.

    The driver of the car, a 19-year-old man, suffered minor injuries and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving. He has been released on bail as inquiries continue.

    The collision was on Barnhill Lane close to the junction with the B1228, Boothferry Road and Main Street junction  at 20:15.

    Beverley has again been shortlisted in the British Coach Tourism awards. 

    The town has been making a determined effort in recent years to attract more coach parties, introducing a scheme last year which sees visitors arriving by coach issued with welcome packs and vouchers for shops.

    There's been a big increase in coach parties since the promotion was started.

    An online treasure hunt game almost sparked a police incident in Hull today.

    Humberside Police were alerted when someone was seen on CCTV strapping a package (pictured) under a bench on Whitefriargate in Hull City Centre at 05:40 today but the officers identified it was to do with an online game.

    Geocache is a game where someone attaches a package or message in a public space and posts the exact coordinates online so people can find it.

    The police are now asking people to use common sense, external when putting the packages in public spaces and ask people to pre-warn them on 101.

    I've been speaking to Spar shop manager Linda Carrington about the cash machine theft from the store in Thorngumbald.

    She told me she's "absolutely dumbfounded" and "couldn't believe it had happened."

    During the early hours a cash machine was stolen from the Spar shop on Church Lane by thieves who used a fork lift machine to rip the ATM out of the building.

    A bid to stop traffic lights being installed at a busy roundabout near Grimsby is being looked at today.

    Controversial recommendations for traffic lights at the Tollbar roundabout were approved recently by North East Lincolnshire Council but that decision was then called in by the Conservative group to be looked at again. 

    A scrutiny committee will discuss this today.

  20. Bridlington elderly 'struggling to get to Scarborough Hospital'published at 11:04 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2017

    Some elderly people in Bridlington are cancelling hospital appointments because it's too hard for them to get to Scarborough Hospital. 

    That's the claim being made by Jean Wormwell, who chairs the Bridlington Health Forum. 

    The shuttle bus which connected Bridlington with Scarborough Hospital stopped running last month. 

    All attempts to get a replacement bus service have failed.
