    A head teacher at a Hull primary school has been explaining why he's decided to curtail the Easter holidays this year.

    Staff and pupils at St Andrews Primary on Sutton Fields will get just one week of Easter holiday instead of two. They'll get back the remaining week in May.

    A thought-provoking new exhibition in Hull explores the changing boundaries between land and sea, and how water can be a division between countries, as well as a route connecting them.

    Somewhere Becoming Sea, which  opens today at the Humber Street Gallery  and runs until 17 June, features new work by artists from different parts of the North Sea region.

    It's the first of two new exhibitions opening at the gallery today.

    Raft of the Medusa (pictured below) is based on a famous painting by Gericault, external , which depicts the makeshift raft constructed by the crew of the Medusa from wood salvaged from their sinking vessel.

    It also includes the smell of decaying rubber and seaweed for extra effect!

  4. Domestic abuse 'top priority' for Humberside Policepublished at 13:29 British Summer Time 5 April 2017

    Humberside Police say they're getting about 66 reports of domestic abuse every day. 

    The force says the issue has become a top priority for officers across East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire. 

    Det Ch Insp Phil Gadd has told BBC Radio Humberside that domestic abuse doesn't have to mean violence.

    "The new offence of coercive and controlling behaviour is broadening the scope of domestic abuse. People find themselves trapped in relationships for many different reasons," he says.

    It looks like the Tigers will go to Wembley this season, but perhaps not in the way fans would prefer.

    They feature on the brand new official Hull Monopoly game, which hits the shelves this Friday. 

    The club, who play Middlesbrough tonight, are on a customised Community Chest card:

    All the Hull Monopoly location owners, their positions and their prices to buy, will be revealed at The Ferens Art Gallery on Friday. 

    This sport set is one of 10 exclusive Hull Monopoly sets, replacing those from the original London classic.

    Another name has been added to the line-up for the two-day Tidal Waves Beach Music Festival in Bridlington.

    Indie rock band The Pigeon Detectives are due to perform at the event at South Cliff beach on Saturday 10 June.  

    Formed in 2002, the platinum-selling band from West Yorkshire released their fifth studio album, Broken Glances, in February. 

    Their first record, Wait for Me, released in 2007, went on to achieve sales of half-a-million.

    As well as The Pigeon Detectives, Saturday's programme will see The Hoosiers, Reverend and the Makers and Toploader supported by a host of local talent.

    The council committed to provide four events to help extend the Hull UK City of Culture 2017 programme into the region.

    "Yorkshire can make whisky that's as good as the ones you can find in Scotland."

    That's the message from the founders of one of the county's first ever whisky distilleries near Driffield. 

    They say so much barley from the Yorkshire Wolds is sent to Scotland to make scotch, it seemed a shame no-one had been making a local single malt.

    You'll have to wait a while before you can try it though:

  10. Man hurt as wheelchair collides with taxi in Grimsbypublished at 10:59

    A man has suffered a fractured shin after his electric wheelchair was in collision with a taxi in Grimsby.

    The 53-year-old man was crossing the road on Station Approach between 11:00 and 12:00 on Friday 24 March when his wheelchair collided with a white taxi.

    The driver, who's thought to be a woman, briefly stopped before leaving the area without exchanging details.  

    Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident to get in touch with police.

    New flood defence plans have been unveiled for the River Hull.

    A total of 39 places on the river have been  identified as needing better flood protection .

    Environment Agency staff are on hand today to discuss the plans at the Guildhall.

  12. Police appeal after burglary and assault in Goolepublished at 10:11 British Summer Time 5 April 2017

    Two people have been attacked by thieves wielding a baseball bat or metal bar during a burglary in Goole.

    The assault took place at about 17:30 last Friday at a house on Parliament Street, and saw both victims being hit about the head.

    They needed treatment at Hull Royal Infirmary for their injuries which police say are serious but not life-threatening.

    Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the police.

    A swimming instructor from Fangfoss, near Pocklington, has told me her training to become a racing jockey is going well.

    Stella Riley is one of 12 novice riders who will battle it out in a big charity horse race at York races in June. 

    The MacMillan charity day, which takes place in front of 20,000 racegoers, has raised £7m for charity since it was founded in 1971.

    We'll find out more today on £36m worth of flood defences along the River Hull.

    A total of 39 places along the river have been identified as needing better flood protection.

    The schemes, plans for which will be on display at the Guildhall later today, range from repairing the existing walls to the complete replacement of some defences.

    Work on a section of flood defences downstream of Stoneferry Bridge in Hull is also due to begin later this month.

    There's anger about the number of blood collection sessions closing in East Yorkshire.

    The end of blood collection at Leven Sports Hall, near Beverley, follows the end of collection sessions in Brough and Kingswood in Hull earlier this year. 

    Pat Ablett, chair of Leven Parish Council, says it'll discourage people from giving blood. 

    But NHS Blood and Transplants, which organises the collections, says the sessions weren't cost-effective and it was pushing up the cost of blood to hospitals.
