  5. Van Empel takes Tour de Yorkshire's first climbpublished at 14:12 British Summer Time 28 April 2017

    Peter Scrivener
    BBC Sport

The first categorised climb of this year's race is the Cote de Garrowby Hill – at about one mile in length it's not particularly long for the pros, but it has an average gradient of 8.9% and that’s enough to sting the legs.

James Lowsley-Williams goes early for the line but is agonisingly caught by Dutch cyclist Etienne van Empel, who takes the four points on offer.

Lowsley-Williams gets third and one point after also being passed by Spanish rider Madrazo of Raleigh.

  7. Yorkshire's taking its toll on Tour leaderspublished at 14:02 British Summer Time 28 April 2017

    Peter Scrivener
    BBC Sport

The eight out front are blowing a bit. Yorkshire's undulating terrain is already taking its toll as they pedal along country lines dotted with Yorkshire flags and fans.

Their lead is down under three minutes but the peloton will be wary of catching them too soon.

If they do, then there will be more attacks off the front, sapping energy and disrupting the race for the bigger teams with the more fancied riders.

So expect the leaders to stay out there for a good while yet.
