    The former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, will visit Hull in the autumn.

    Mr Annan held the post for nine years and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001.

    He will deliver a lecture at Hull City Hall during the annual Freedom Festival in September.

    A blue plaque will be unveiled at Hull's Paragon Station today, dedicated to the Spiders From Mars.

    David Bowie and Mick Ronson

    The band hailed from Hull and East Yorkshire and were made famous when they became David Bowie's backing group.

    The plaque is being unveiled this morning as part of BBC Music Day at Hull Paragon Station.

    A book marking the history of Hull's Humber street has been published.

    Humber Street is home to Hull's historical fruit market.

    It provided work for hundreds of people for over 120 years before the shutters in the street came down for the last time in 2009.

    It has been regenerated at part of Hull's year as City of Culture.

    Mike Freeman, who worked on Humber street for 40 years and author John Riley have created a book called, 'The Life and Time of Humber Street.'

    Andrew Percy has posted on his Instagram account that he is to step down as Northern Powerhouse Minister.

    Last week the Brigg and Goole MP increased his Parliamentary majority by over a thousand votes.

    He was appointed Northern Powerhouse minister in July 2016.

    Mr Percy has given his backing to Theresa May, despite the Conservatives not winning a majority in the election.

    The world's first women's boxing champion has been given a standing ovation, after the premiere of a play inspired by her life.

    Barbara Buttrick, who's now eighty seven years old, met the cast of Mighty Atoms at Hull Truck Theatre.

    Barbara, who's originally from Cottingham near Hull, wasn't allowed to fight women in the UK, so moved to America where she won the title in 1957.

    Black cabs could be more expensive in North East Lincolnshire, if the council approves a proposed fare increase.

    Drivers have asked North East Lincolnshire Council to let them increase their tariffs in the face of increasing costs.

    Councillors are due to consider the request at a meeting later today.

    Hull City Council has issued a statement on the safety of multi-storey flats after a fire ripped through a 24-storey west London residential building killing six people.

    At least 6 people have been killed in the fire

    The statement starts by passing the council's thoughts and condolences to all those affected by the fire in London.

    The council have reiterated that these type of incidences are extremely rare.

    They say there are 25 blocks of council-owned high rise apartments in the city. All are subject to a thorough annual fire safety check and also assessed on a daily basis.

    The council say people who run the buildings receive training to ensure the threat of fire is kept to a minimum.

    In light of the Kensington fire, the council will be monitoring developments at this incident very closely, looking to see what lessons can be learned and, in liaison with Humberside Fire & Rescue Service, reviewing our own fire safety procedures if this is necessary and ensuring that this is clearly communicated to our residents.

    Humberside police team have tweeted that one lane has been opened at junction five of the M180 at Barnetby Top.

    A lorry had spilled large amounts of wood onto the carriageway closing both lanes earlier this morning.

    The police are urging people to pass with care.

    Bridlington and Hull have been named in the top 10 emerging tourist destinations in the UK.

    International travel firm Trivago has been monitoring which places have seen the biggest increase in interest from visitors.
