  6. Fears for the future of community transport in East Yorkshirepublished at 16:14 British Summer Time 29 September 2017

    Sarah Sanderson
Political Reporter East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire

Community transport groups in East Yorkshire claim they're at risk of closure because of planned government changes.

The Holderness Area Rural Transport group say proposed new rules for drivers could force community transport to shut down and leave people who use the service isolated.

Last year they provided over 45,000 journeys for passengers.

The government's now written to community transport providers across the country saying its looking into whether drivers for some community transport groups should, in the future, hold a public service vehicle licence.

Along with the training and the test, this licence can cost around £1,000 to obtain.

Some argue these proposed changes could hike up running costs and make it difficult for services like this to continue.

The Department for Transport says it has to make these changes because of EU law and it plans to consult later this year on which operators will require professional licences.

There are claims this morning that hospital patients are being left alone to die in wards because of a shortage of nurses.

The Royal College of Nursing say more than half of nurses in the Yorkshire and Humber region say their shifts have been understaffed, leading to compromises in patient care.

They surveyed 30,000 members across the UK and more than half reported being upset after their last shift because they couldn't provide the care they wanted.

Chris Perry, (pictured) who recently resigned as a director of nursing, says our ageing population is placing growing pressure on the NHS and staff are struggling to cope.
