  14. Benefits change could lead to Grimsby renters evictedpublished at 11:24 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2017

    Kate Sweeting
    Reporter, BBC Look North

A Grimsby landlord has defended sending letters to tenants warning them of eviction if they can't keep up with their rent payments after they switch to the government's new Universal Credit benefits system.

Yesterday the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and the Prime Minister clashed over the letter sent to some tenants of GAP Properties in North East Lincolnshire.

    Jeremy Corbyn

The new benefit can take six weeks to go through and Guy Piggott from GAP says he won't wait that long.

He added the letter to tenants was not an eviction notice but instead a warning for people to make arrangements to carry on with their payments.

The Department for Work and Pensions say advance payments are widely available from the start of anyone's Universal Credit claim, and that urgent cases are fast-tracked so no one should be without money.
