    Former Chancellor Norman Lamont has hit back at critics who claim his home town will suffer as a result of Brexit.

    Lord Lamont was brought up in Grimsby and is part of a team behind plans to regenerate the town.

    But its predictions about the impact of Brexit on Grimsby that provokes the strongest reaction from the former Chancellor. He claims in 10 year's time "people will forget we were ever members of the European Union".

    Figures in the local seafood industry have called for the area to be given free-trade status after Britain leaves the EU.

    A proposal that has not gone down well with those who are opposed to our departure including the scientist Brian Cox who suggested on social media that everyone in the country should be given a Brexit exemption.

    North East Lincolnshire recorded one of the highest votes in favour of Brexit.

    Almost 70% opted to leave the EU and this area continues to be at the centre of this highly-charged debate.

    Plans are being drawn up to preserve a former Humber ferry.

    The PSS Wingfield Castle is currently docked at The National Museum of the Royal Navy in Hartlepool, where it was built.

    Radio Humberside was contacted by a concerned listener, Graham Lilley who is appealing to the people of Hull to "bring back our paddleboat, it's rotting in Hartlepool, it's our last chance to save this bit of history and culture".

    But Hartlepool Borough Council say there is a Conservation Management Plan which will help them to preserve and display the vessel, which they are committed to keeping there.

    The UK's fishing industry, like those around the River Humber are being discussed in Parliament today.

    There are concerns about the risk of leaving the EU without any trading arrangements in place.

    Today fishing industry leaders have told MP's Brexit is an "enormous opportunity" to take control of quotas and sustainability in UK waters.

    Experts have been giving evidence to a Commons Environment committee.

    Bertie Armstrong is from the Scottish Fishermen's Federation, he says they don't want a 'no-deal' scenario, but that current transition plans won't suit the industry:

    Hull City's Jackson Irvine was part of the Australia squad this morning that helped them qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

    The Socceroos defeated Honduras 3-1 in Sydney.

    Irvine was an unused substitute for the match.

    Plans to transform Hull's transport network are being discussed today.

    Councillor Martin Mancey, who is due to retire from Hull City Council next year, wants to create a legacy project.

    He told BBC Radio Humberside he wants to double the amount that is spent on highways maintenance and improvements to £23m.

    A Driffield pensioner has raised nearly £50,000 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance by selling homemade jam, preserves and chutneys.

    Ann Kent has been selling her produce at events across the region for the last nine years.

    Now her efforts are being recognised with a special volunteer's award.

    Ann (pictured right) makes up to 3,000 jars a year with locally donated fruit and veg.

    Her sister Edna Turner (left) from Nafferton also makes cakes and fruit loaves which she sells and donates the money to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

    The Yorkshire Air Ambulance serves five million people across Yorkshire and carries out over 1,250 missions every year.

    The charity needs to raise £12,000 every day to keep saving lives.

    Run-down parts of Driffield with derelict buildings on them could be regenerated under new plans.

    The town council wants to set up a community-led housing company to look at building new homes on brownfield sites in the town.

    They include derelict factories north of Middle Street and the old White's Sugar Mill site (pictured above) near the railway station.

    There's a big shortage of affordable houses in the East Riding.

    Driffield Town Council thinks setting up a community housing company may allow some cheaper homes to be built.

    The rainy summer is being blamed for the disappointing water quality at three East Yorkshire beaches.

    Hornsea, Withernsea and Flamborough South Landing beaches were all downgraded from excellent to good.

    A spokesman for the Yorkshire Bathing Water Partnership said rainfall in the summer was higher than average and microbes had been washed from farmland into the sea.

    Humberside Police says a number of parking notices appearing on cars in Hornsea have not been issued by the force and are fake.

    Warnings have been appearing around Rawson's Way because people are parking on the pavements in that area.

    East Riding Council says it's not an offence to park on the pavement in the region unless there is a sign clearly indicating you cannot park there.

    They add that causing an obstruction on the highway is a matter that should be raised with the police.

    Figures just out show the number of people unemployed in Yorkshire and the Humber has gone up slightly.

    Between July to September 2,000 more people were out of work in the region - to 131,000.

    Nationally, the number of people in work has fallen by 14,000, to 32 million people - the biggest reduction in over two years.

    Hull's Old Town has changed dramatically since Hull was announced as the City of Culture four years ago.

    The area has seen millions of pounds worth of investment and the council has created a grant scheme to help people get their new ventures off the ground.

    Work done by us here at BBC Radio Humberside shows more than 50 new businesses, which weren't around in 2013, now call the city's historic heart their home.

    That doesn't include figures on which businesses have closed.

    In Hornsea someone is so cross with people parking on the pavements that they've gone to the trouble of printing off fake parking tickets and sticking them on vehicles.

    They look like they are the real deal, with the plastic yellow sticky wallet - and even threatening police action.

    But it is not an offence to park on pavements in East Yorkshire unless there is a sign saying so.

    Both Humberside Police and East Riding Council have told us that they have nothing to do with the tickets and are urging people who know anything about them to contact the police.

    A debate's taking place at Westminster today to discuss the challenges facing the UK Fishing Industry following Brexit.

    The department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) will consider the impact that leaving the European Union has had on places like East Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire.

    It'll look at the effect it has had on UK fishing, seafood processors and consumers ahead of the anticipated Fisheries Bill.

    More than 50,000 tree saplings are to be planted in our region.

    The Woodland Trust have sent out a record number of seedlings - 561,000 - across the country in the last two weeks.

    In Yorkshire and the Humber almost 280 schools have taken delivery of 52,000 young trees.

    The Woodland Trust say the free tree packs will be planted to encourage wildlife, combat climate change and prevent flooding.

    The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is supporting the Trust to provide 100,000 trees a year to state funded schools for the next 4 years.

  17. Inquiry to decide on oil drilling well near Scunthorpepublished at 08:25 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2017

    Today is the last day of an inquiry which is looking into a decision to deny a company permission to drill for oil in a North Lincolnshire village.

    Egdon Resources had hoped to extract up to 700,000 barrels from a single oil well at a site in Wressle, estimated to be worth as much as £30m.

    The council have refused permission a number of times because they have environmental concerns.

    Egdon Resources say the process is safe.

    The ruling from the inquiry is expected to be made in the near future.
